New JQ CEO & QF Appointment

From Travel Daily

Buchanan takes Jetstar reins
Jetstar group general manager commercial Bruce Buchanan has just been named as the new chief executive officer of the carrier, taking over from QF ceo-designate Alan Joyce effective 01 Oct.

Qantas has also just confirmed that John Borghetti will remain in his role of Executive General Manager of Qantas Airlines, with responsibility for sales, marketing, scheduling, network, the customer experience and Qantaslink.

However there will be some changes to the structure with the accession of Joyce on 28 Nov, including the appointment of Virgin Atlantic Chief Operating Officer Lyell Strambi to the newly created position of Executive General Manager Operations Qantas Airlines.

Strambi, who also previously worked with both Geoff Dixon and Alan Joyce at Ansett Airlines, will relocate to Sydney to take up his new role effective 01 Dec, and will be responsible for QF engineering, pilots, airports, catering and flight training.

More information in today's Travel Daily.

So, is there an Executive GM Operations now?

Wasn't that the title that David Forsyth had when he departed QF?
I'm sure David had responsibility for Flight Operations as well as E&M, was that right?

Perhaps Joyce has seen a problem and has decided to address it?
Perhaps for the benefit of all of you people there, he can address more problems.

A SENIOR Jetstar executive has been accused of engaging in 'funny business" with a woman on a fold-down seat in the first-class cabin of a flight from Melbourne to Los Angeles on Friday.

Bruce Buchanan, the airline's commercial general manager, was on Qantas Flight 93 to the US when the incident allegedly took place. After the lights went down on the 14-hour trip, a woman apparently moved to share his seat.

Another first-class passenger complained to a flight attendant, according to people in the cabin at the time.

Sources on the flight said it was not clear what was going on but there was no suggestion the pair were having sex. "It was just funny business," one source said.

It is unclear whether cuddling constitutes a breach of strict behavioural guidelines which apply to airline employees but the incident was enough for staff on the flight to prepare a report for Qantas management.

It raises questions about the behaviour of Jetstar employees, including senior executives such as Mr Buchanan, travelling on discounted staff flights.

Staff must wear "appropriate" clothes, not jeans, and show exemplary behaviour.

Last week Qantas, the parent company of Jetstar, was forced to reinstate a cabin supervisor sacked for breaching policy by taking chocolate-covered macadamia nuts from a flight.

The cabin steward, Philip Woodward-Brown, had been stood down immediately after the offending nuts were discovered on his person during a routine security check in Tokyo last year.

When the incident took place on Friday, Mr Buchanan was travelling to Los Angeles for a holiday.

A Jetstar spokesman confirmed last night the incident was being investigated but said the airline was yet to speak to Mr Buchanan about the complaint.

"We do not believe the event was of a serious nature. A full investigation will take place but we obviously want to hear Mr Buchanan's side of the story," the spokesman said.

Qantas also confirmed that it was investigating the incident but said it did not appear to be a serious offence.

Mr Buchanan, who could not be reached for comment, is due back from his holiday next week.

Well call button,

I'm just taking a wild stab in the dark here, but by your 'name', I'd venture that you're a cabin crew member. If you're not, then I apologise unreservedly for what I'm about to say.

Kind of ironic that you should post about unacceptable behaviour (not sure what relevance to the topic, unless it's aimed at besmirching BB's name) when clearly, the QF F/A ranks have a proven track record as far as 'funny business' in-flight is concerned.

Stones and glass houses, eh?

Funny Business

Call Button seems to have missed his/her calling. Seems to me they could use his/her talents at either the Women's Weekly or the gossip columns of a newspaper. Get a life Call Button.

yes but that senior exec would be the one "making the rules" we staff travallers live by and he would be the one "ripping the stripes off" you for doing the very same thing. If it was you and me we would be guilty before innocent.

Just shows you the type of people we have running the show in all Airline management. ( same goes for my Airline CX )

Aren't they supposed to lead by example?

Think your missing call buttons point - if your in JQ you engage in funny business you get promoted. If you are in QF engage in funny business you get fired.

Discrimination anyone?

RAD_ALT_ALIVE & Old Fella....

I think both of you have missed the point of call button's post and that is....

'Do as I say and not as I do'

Oh I don't know about that because I have seen pilots get into some trouble over the years as well as cabin crew.

The difference though is that it is cheaper to replace cabin crew than it is a pilot and that seems to be a deciding factor in the result of an investigation....

It all comes down to what you do for a living rather than what you have allegedly done wrong....but then again that is not peculiar to aviation.

I thought call button's post added to this thread unlike some of the posters.

Looks like JQ get another wally to take the lead. And people wonder why it's hard to have respect for some senior management....

Look for Matthew Lee (ex AN) and currently the Director of Flight Operations at Virgin Atlantic to follow Lyell Strambi to Qantas.

I might be reading it wrong - doesn't this basically take half of JB's job away from him?

From memory Strambi was the head of the business recovery program at AN under Eddington, he got the flick when the Kiwis took over.

Jeez, I don't know 45 years of flying, and never once did I get invited to join in any "funny business", the most exciting thing I did with my missus, was try to find her shoes which had moved two seats down! Half his bloody luck!

Hell if someone hadn't posted about Bruce's 15 mins of fame, I would have!
It made me laugh for an entire shift. It was hilarious.

I still think Gerry Turner would have been a better choice for the next JQ CEO.

BB is fine, a little out of touch but that's usual for the staggering heights of the fifth floor.

Party Time

Matt's always hung onto Lyells tail so we're all hoping this is the end for both of them, there'll be some party if they both go. They helped sink Ansett, the waters coming in fast, just hope it's not too late.

Virginal Original. Is it true Virgin Atlantic are "suffering" at present and have some concerns about their A380 order. Are SQ still looking to offload their shareholding.

Ps. I think Strambi and Lee may have been planted by SQ.
