Un-Partition Hard Disk
 

My Acer laptop came with a 100gb hard disc partioned in half - C 50 gb and D 50 gb. I would prefer to have just a C drive.How do I un-partition the hard disk?

Hmm..
Right, you are aware what is normally on the D drive of an Acer laptop? The recovery disk!! and unless you've got a dual layer burner, the contents are larger than a standard DVD. This is why Acer (normally) do not supply system OS disks, but prompt you to create a bootable recovery disk which then re-installs from D. So the first thing you should do is create a mirror of D and store it somewhere, delete the partition and reformat the disk completely and start again.
Seems a lot of hard work...
Ps stand to be corrected, but I've had to install new OS in 2 machines for people who deleted D :suspect:

The recovery stuff is not usually on D but in a hidden partition. If you get into disk management you should see all the partitions and be able to change their sizes. You might need to delete the D bit first and then expand C to use up the free space. Make sure you copy everything you want off the D drive first.

I did it the other way on my Acer - made the C smaller for the operating system and programs, and made the D bit bigger for all of the data.

In Vista, go to start, control panel, administrative tools, computer management, disk management.

Ah well - on mine it was certainly hidden, but on D - no other partitions. But that was 160 gb 18 months ago..:O
and now I check it was helpfully titled ACERDATA

Software such as Partition Magic or my current favorite, Acronis, will do this. A free Partition Magic clone called EASEUS also claims to do this, but I have no personal experience with it.

OK, I tried EASEUS out. It works fine.

Good link - I've just used EASEUS disk copy to clone an existing 160GB drive to a new 320Gb drive and it was fairly snagless.

I'm going to play with the unhide option on the old drive next.
