USB stick into iPad

Apologies for the repeat request.

Many moons ago I bemoaned the inability to put a USB memory stick into an iPad because of the lack of USB Port, and someone kindly referred me to the MobileLite WiFi transmitter device, into which one can insert the stick and then at least read it on the iPad.

I purchase this and have used it successfully until now, but the MobilLite device seems to have developed a fault, accessing any USB device is very much a hit and miss affair, and I can't guarantee success at will.

Another disadvantage is that one only read, no editing or adding of data from the iPad on to the stick is possible.

At the time of my original enquiry, another device was also mentioned, but this has long ben deleted and I can't remember the name - any clues out there ?

I've tried using a lightning connector to USB port and it doesn't work. A waste of money. What I use now is this:

It's not the perfect solution but it enables me to add stuff to my 16gb iPhone as I can't use my iPad on my return flight from Cairo.

USB stick into iPad

Like many others I had the self same problem. A device crippled by very bad software. After quite some use I can recommended the Verbatim Media Share. Has performed faultlessly and for about £30 it does what it says on the tin.

You will need to check for "USB On The Go" (USB OTG) support in both your device (iPad) and the connector/interface you are using. iPad supports OTG (I'm not sure if iPhones all do). Android support for OTG is also spotty.

OTG support depends on both the hardware platform (your iDevice) as well as software drivers to allow the device to act as a USB host rather then a peripheral. Most phones and tablets were originally intended to be USB peripherals.

ExSp, this may be of interest.

External hard drive or memory stick input to BT Hub router (USB port); then with File Explorer App or similar, transfer files to iPad. As discussed may/may not work both ways.

Why do you need a USB stick when you've got the cloud?

You trust the Cloud with all your stuff ?

Not the point, anyway. I choose, and want, to use a USB stick and facilities are available, just forgotten one of the options that was recommended a couple of years ago. Sorry.

( I don't have a Smartphone, either. Dinosaurs Rule, O.K. )

and ... how do I access the Overcast when not connected to the Internet, which, as I'm travelling away from home at the moment is a frequent occurrence, a memory stick gives me immediate, private, access to infrequently needed information offline.

Later ... From Cnet. today ....Quote: Back in May, for example, security research center MacKeeper reported that a massive database of stolen passwords had surfaced online. And while it was composed largely of passwords from a variety of sources, many of them years old, its newfound accessibility -- and conglomeration into a single collection -- is cause for concern... unquote. iCloud anyone ?

QED.

Apple will usually try and cripple any non genuine accessories along with their regular software updates. An OTG adapter worked fine for me until a recent update after which it wasn't recognised, along with an aftermarket headphone adaptor.

Moved to android for my next mobile phone but still need the iPad for work apps.

Good luck with that... Many USB sticks and Android OS's are now incompatible. I've spent many happy hours trying to get an assortment ofdevices to work. Later Android versions have completely broken USB (and card) storage...

Have you looked at Lightning or Wifi compatible USB drives? I don't have any experience with these things and it seems that most have been designed to extend the storage of an iPad or iPhone, but depending on the apps one or more might fit the bill here.

There are some other articles about this subject if you Google 'usb stick with lightning connector' but the link above is the most recent one.

Jhieminga - the MobiLite gadget shown in your link is similar to the one I have, which is giving some trouble at times, not 100% reliable now. When new it did precisely what I wanted it to, quickly, now it is a bit hit and miss as to whether it connects to the iPad. I can get a message that the WiFi signal is connected but it takes ages, and sometimes not at all, to display the data from the USB stick. And it is only Read Only, no editing possible, still, when needing access to passwords captured on a USB stick hanging from my keychain - invaluable.

Ain't technology wonderful - when it works. Anyone for pilotless aircraft ? Pax address system message ..... " Don't worry, sit back and relax in the knowledge that nothing can go wrong, go wrong, go wrong, go wrong."

Last year I was able to transfer my piccys from my Canon EOS to my iPad using the lightning and card connector. Now thanks to software updates it refuses allow such transfers so I'm stuffed until I get home to see how they turn out.

Is there maybe a wireless memory card for your camera that would allow such transfer?
