Can't burn CDs/DVDs

HP/Compaq Elite 8300, W7 Pro 64bit, 8Gb RAM etc. Installed DVD player plays CDs and DVDs but won't burn anything. I have an EXTERNAL USB player which works fine but have just installed another INTERNAL player and, again, won't burn CDs or DVDs. Device appears on the device list and drivers are reported as installed and "ready for use". I'm trying to burn a System Repar Disc but when I select this option in Control Panel, it reports "unable to find a CD/DVD player" (or some such message.) Any suggestions, please?

OK - I'll ask the obvious question. Are you sure you have a DVD writer installed and not just a reader? Go to Device Manager, select DVD device and look up the description to see which it is.

O & H - !
First off, I had no idea there was such a thing as a read-only device; second, the replacement is a similar item but there was no indication of its limitation on the listing
Thirdly, and more importantly, thank you for realising that there was the possibility of me being such a total pillock!!!

Seems unlikely it would be a DVD-ROM - is there a label on the original DVD drive mentioning make and model number?

They do exist as I learnt to my cost a couple of months ago. Replacement DVD Rewriters can be had for less than £10 and work as soon as they are plugged in

Le P - That's EXACTLY what I thought but I was wrong!! (not unusual!)
O&H - yes, indeed they do - just sent off for a replacement DVD RECORDER
Thank you, both, for your replies.
