Google mail activating avast anti-virus

During the last few months, when I log on the Gmail and the Google hangouts are about to be loaded avast reacts mentioning a possible contamination being detected and suggests I run a smart control - which I do and finds no issues and hangouts are not loaded - instead a error 101 occurs. Other gmail accounts without contacts do not activate the avast.

I run windows 8.1 and the most recent Firefox and I have ran Malware Bytes which also found nothing.

Any ideas will be most welcome.

Probably need to know the precise wording of the Avast alert. Specifically what file or process is detected, where, and by which shield.

Copy of the message is here:

C: \Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
(The link modified - doesn't go anywhere.)

What I'd be inclined to do is scan for outdated software, in order to check your flash player etc is properly up to date. This can be done from the Avast scan interface.
Update anything indicated.
Then scan for undesirable browser add-ons. Remove anything flagged.

Download adwCleaner from here https://toolslib.net/downloads/viewd.../1-adwcleaner/ and run it.

Set Firefox to block undesirable sites/processes:

Open "tools" in Firefox. (Should be an icon shaped like a cog.)
In the "Security" tab, put a tick in the first three boxes, namely "warn me when sites try to install add-ons", and both boxes under and including "Block dangerous and deceptive content".
Restart.
Any better? Anything found by any of the scans?
