Apple iOS 10 ?

When I was in the USA recently I attended an Apple Store and asked about upgrading my iPad Mini from the iOS 8 system it came loaded with, to the then iOS 9 that was current.

It was suggested that unless I needed the new features of iOS 9 – and nobody could definitively tell me what they were – then why bother, and as I only have a 16Gb iPad then the iOS 9 system might swallow up a lot of my remaining capacity ? If you're happy with what you've got, and it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, was the opinion.

Now there is iOS 10, so the same question arises, and I don’t know what advantages there are, doubtless a lot of stuff that I don’t need ? I only use my iPad as a travelling aid, not my main computer, which is Microsoft.

A friend was updating his iPad to iOS 10 this morning - a message said it would take another 9 hours ! - and I discussed this with him, but he seemed to think that, yes, I need space to ADD iOS 10 to my iPad in the first place, but then I could remove the original iOS 8. I wouldn’t know how to do that.

This question has arisen because Mrs. ExS has an older iPad with iOS 7, and has read about a Norton Privacy product that effectively creates a VPN, but requires iOS 8 or better, so she will have to upgrade to iOS 10 - I guess Apple will no longer offer iOS 8 ? - but she has a 32Gb machine, so the issue is not as critical.

Opinions ?

Yeah, the upgrades can be a problem on 16GB iPads. My girlfriend had to clear up a bunch of space for the iOS 9 upgrade on hers, though she got the space back after she installed it and the iPad deleted the original install file.

However, I believe there's a way to do it through iTunes such that you don't have to download the install file to the iPad, and can install it on there from the PC instead?

But, when you say 'iPad Mini', do you mean the original iPad Mini, or are you just using it as a generic term? Because you can't install iOS 10 on the original iPad Mini.

Either way, we're waiting until 10.1 before we risk updating.

Did the update yesterday on my iPad 5 and iPhone 6.
It took 20-30 minutes, no big deal.
Got a few MB storage left, not maxed out. (16 total)
Some new features, takes longer to open the iPad, need to get used to it.

My advice - don't upgrade software via OTA (Over the air) do it via iTunes. My 16gb 6s crashed and was bricked. It took 3 hours and a lot of reading on forums to get it back. It seems it is a worldwide problem. Remember for safety back up your phone/iPad just in case.

I'm with MG23 - always wait at least a week before updating.

The first couple of days Apple's servers are overwhelmed and you get things like "9 hours".

Any, even minor, fault will be over-reported in the press. You, and everyone else, will be well aware of all of Apple's 'failings'. Apple usually fixes these quite soon.

So, if things remain quiet (well done Apple) I'll upgrade next week, even if we haven't seen 10.1.

Biggest issue according to my daughter is that swipe to unlock is gone, it's home button only now. You get used to it after a bit.

And the short cut swipe to open the camera has disappeared from the home page.

This is interesting. I just tried to upgrade my Ipad from version 9.3.5 but it said I was up to date. I immediately looked on my Iphone and the update to 10 has appeared.

If it's an original Ipad Mini (not 2,3 or 4) I don't think you can get IOS 10 for it, different CPU. One of ours is same, the newer models do upgrade.

Yup, earlier iPhones and ipod touches are stuck at ios 8, or older. The older hardware just doesn't work with the new software, eventually the apps stop working too, and then you have to buy a new one. This is not confined to Apple, either.

It's still there, you just need to swipe left instead of up. Just try to unlock your phone 'the old way' and you'll most likely find the camera

Re swipe to unlock.

It's still there but that and fingerprint unlock need to be reset after the upgrade.
I found the following to reset mine.

Disable iOS 10 Press Home To Unlock / Open On Lock Screen, Here's How | Redmond Pie

To clarify my other post. When installed, the swipe and fingerprint were both disabled. Press home to unlock immediately opened my iPad without any security required. The above link restores security but rather than swiping, pressing home brings up the number pad to enter the pass code and enables the fingerprint function.

They're up to 10.0.1 now, and the Apple TV managed to update itself without breaking, so I risked updating one iPad yesterday. Don't see much difference so far, other than the iPad home screen (and the Apple TV now having a 'dark' theme which I don't think was there before).

IOS 10,
I really wish Apple would not assume I want them to go through my Photos and create a Faces and a Places folder and then populate them with what they think I might want there.
At least make the feature a preference that I can opt into if I so choose.

A bit like OS X Photos opening when I connect a memory card in spite of the fact that I do not use Photos. (Yes, I know that you can disable the feature by entering a Terminal command, I have done that, but that should not be necessary, it should be a preference).

I am an Apple user, (eight devices), and generally am pleased with their systems but their assumption that they know what I shall like is really ticking me off.

IOS 10 caused my ipad air 32gb to brick. I downloaded via Itunes, and it still went wrong. Its worst feature was the destruction of all my carefully selected and catalogued photo files. I had to delete the ipad photo cache on the pc before I could do anything. The usual hours of my life restoring my ipad and re-creating the photo files.
I quite like the ipad air, but it really needs a much bigger memory..............and Applewedontpaytax charge hundreds of pounds for a memory addition that costs them pennies.

OS 10.12 - Sierra seems to be a faultless transition on my MacBook Pro. Nice to see Siri has a discreet logo on the top RHS.

My 16GB iPhone 5S worked fine after 30 mins or so upgrading tp iOS 10. I have over 3,000 photos on there, and all seems ok. There are some new default Albums, but nothing is ever moved out of the main "All Photos" album, so that's ok.

The "Press Home To Unlock" uses the fingerprint reader immediately. If I use a different finger, the passcode screen comes up. None of my security settings were affected as far as I can see.

All fine on my 64 Gb 5c, however I note that I now have to press the home button twice in order to reach the unlock code page. Its just annoying. Why cant they just leave the bloody thing alone.
