W7 64bit and Bluetooth

HP XW 4600 workstation, Mega HD space and 8Gbs RAM, W7 64 bit Premium.. Trying to operate a Belkin (or any other) Bluetooth adaptor but each one is disabled by Windows due "incompatibility". So far, nothing gives a permanent fix but yesterday,(no idea why) the system worked absolutely fine through headphones. Tried again today and back to failure. The 'net' indicates this is a world-wide problem so the obvious place to provide a solution is ... Pprune!! Any takers, please?

I can't help with first hand experience because my pcs are both now W10.64. I had an old generic bluetooth adapter which I don't normally use, but just plugged it in and it has happily connected to a 'phone - so there's nothing wrong in W10, and I don't really see why 7 would be substantially different.

Have you only just started trying the bt devices or did they ever work properly (except for yesterday)? Are you using Belkin's driver or Microsoft's; and have you tried deleting one or the other and trying again? I'd guess that you have..

Have you tried plugging the adapters in through a usb hub? I have a couple of MS keyboard/mouse sets that won't work properly with the transceiver plugged directly to the pc, but are fine when in a hub.

Unhappy

Thank you. boguing.
Yes, have tried three different adaptors and plugged them into usb 1 and 2 ports but all same, same. A net search shows many with the same problem and the opinion seems to be that MS have 'crippled' Bluetooth on W7 64 bit for reasons best known to themselves. All very odd and hugely frustrating, especially when each of the adaptors were specifically stated to be "W7 64 bit compatible". Widcom similarly claim compatibility ... but it ain't !! MS 'help' is, as usual, utterly unhelpful Greatly tempted to move back to XP.

I did mean trying to plug it into a linked hub as opposed to different ports on the pc - definitely worth a try. I've had this problem with keyboards for about four years now - they miss letters out and sometimes refuse to type at all if plugged in directly, and this is with several different computers, and Win7 and 10.

Don't even think about going back to XP. Have you tried W10? I know that it's attracted some adverse comment on many forums, but I don't think that much of it is very fair. MS have never given an operating system to virtually everyone before. They've only given an upgrade on then very recently bought machines purchased close to an OS release date. What we now have are many millions of people installing a new operating system, who have never done it before. Some were going to go wrong, but this time there's no tech support.

I waited a couple of months before trying it (from 7 because I really didn't like 8) and it has been virtually faultless. One start up utility didn't work and had to be re-installed, and last weekend I came home to find a machine that had updated itself had shut down (but it may well have been a power cut, had two today). One machine was a bit stroppy about installing a film scanner and I thought that it was W10's fault. I rolled it back to 7, which only took a few minutes, found that it wouldn't install because I was doing it wrong, did it properly and re-installed 10. It really is that easy. There are plenty of tips on the web showing what to disable if privacy is a concern.

Anyway my point is that you could try 10 out, see if your Bluetooth works, then decide whether you like it or not.

Thank you again, boguing.
Hmmm ... W10?? Having laboured through the various iterations of Gates's follies since Win2/3, the thought that BG would give ANYTHING away, without an ulterior motive, would stretch my credibility beyond breaking point!! So, NO W10 for me, thank you. Bluetooth is, for me, an interesting add-on, not an essential and the interest is, now, why an accepted standard accessory refuses to work on just one version of the software - and, more particularly, why neither of the drivers work or can be made to work. Neither the adaptor manufacturer nor MS have even acknowledged the problem, let alone put any effort into resolving it.

Just an update ... all now working as advertised!! How so??? ...
Procedure for anyone else so affected - but I make no claims for expertise. The following is what I did -
1. Start - Run... - type:msconfig, enter
2. On the Start list deselect any Bluetooth listings
3. In the start 'Search' box, type 'ms services'
4. Select the resulting listing and find Bluetooth entries and deselect them.
5 Now you can install the Widcom drivers and plug in the Bluetooth adaptor. complete the installation and IGNORE the Windows error warnings.
6. Restart when ready and Robert is your Dad's brother!!!
It has worked for me but, as the self-admittedly least sharp axe in the woodshed, there may be better, more technically savvy ways of doing it.
HTH
