Ipad mail app problem

Chaps, am somewhat exasperated. My ipad mail app, which has worked superbly for a couple of years, has now decided to quit. I was in the middle of replying to an email with 'reply all' when it simply went to a blank template and then, after a short time, disappeared. Everytime that I return to the app, I get the blank template screen again, which disappears after a short time. Frustratingly, I can hear emails arriving but am quite unable to view them. My server for mail is btinternet. I can log onto their site in google and read my emails, so it is not a server problem, more an ipad or an app problem. I have tried all of the usual things such as a hard reset etc and deleting the server account before renewing it again, alas no joy! Is anybody able to help or advise me on this one?

captainsmiffy,

Hmm... very unusual.

Have you upgraded the iPad system software (iOS) to the latest version ?

Have you ever done something silly like jailbreaking your iPad ?

Sometimes get a similar issue, (ipad 2) and find the double click of the home button and shut down all the open apps helps. i must admit though since IOS 6, versions 7 and 8 have stopped the ipad being as slick as it was at first.

If closing the mail app (double click home, push mail screen to the top), then I would turn iPad off and on; hard reset (google it) and then restore. Usually I only need the first two.

Does a hard reset not wipe all data from the ipad making the restore essential?

I interpret captainsmiffy's "hard reset" as being forced reboot (i.e. holding down home and power buttons at the same time until Apple logo is displayed).

But yes, he might need to resort to a fresh install if upgrading iOS doesn't help.

Thanks for the replies, chaps. It isnt jailbroken and the software is IOS 8.3.1. I have also double clicked the home button and closed the open apps. I have also done a forced reboot and a restore from the settings. I have also deleted the server account and set it back up again. I still hear the emails arrive but still no joy! The mail app is preloaded.....can I delete and then reinstall this app?

captainsmiffy,

Unfortunatley you can't tamper with the core-OS apps (Mail included). So the only way to re-install is via the iOS re-install.

Mail is normally very stable, I've never seen it crash as described.

I think probably the best chance of resolution for you would be to make sure you have a good backup and then do a full clean re-install of iOS (e.g. via the DFU method... I can point you in the direction of instructions, its a lot quicker and easier than it sounds ! ) and then start afresh... if possible you might want to consider full fresh setup and not restore from backup.

Aside from that, the only other thing I can vaguely imagine is it might be a malformed email in your inbox or something. Have you tried removing email accounts, setting up a test email account somewhere and tried with just that test account ?

You might also have been unucky and had a corrupted iOS upgrade download when you did it ?

First thing I'd try is switching the iPad off and on again by holding down the power button at the top.

If that doesn't work delete your BT Internet Account from Settings>Mail. Then re add your email account again - messages are all up on the server so you won't loose anything.

One more thought, have you checked how much space your iPad has left in Settings>About? if you have no space left try deleting some unused apps or photos/videos etc.

I helped a friend, who uses BTinternet for their email, when their Iphone suddenly would not send emails. After a lot of googling we found we had to change an SSL setting and this rectified it. Perhaps someone with more knowledge of settings can advise on this? I think it was after an IOS upgrade this happened.

captainsmiffy,

FYI, iOS 8.2 update out today and one of the items mentioned in the description is "Increases stability of Mail"

Might be worth a go.

Thanks, mixture. Have already updated to 8.2 and then deleted the BT account and reloaded it. Alas, no joy!

captainsmiffy,

Are you synchronising to Mac or Windows ?

Just because I'm thinking that if you are able to replicate this problem, then it might be time to start looking at crash logs. So I'd like to try to point you in the right direction as to where to look on your sync system.

If we're able to isolate it reasonably confidently as a technical problem with the Apple software (rather than some issue with BT), then I'll be happy to log it on Apple's Bug Reporting system for you.

It would be to a Mac.....i have no idea about crash logs but thank you for the kind offer of help; what do I need to do? Incidentally, am GMT plus 4...

I can log on to BT via google on the same device. Am confident that it is not a BT problem but, rather, an ipad mail problem.

Close mail App (double click the home button & swipe up)
Open mail App and reproduce the crash

Then...

1. Connect your iPhone and do a sync in iTunes.
2. Open Finder (found in the Dock)
3. Click on the 'Go' menu at the top of your screen, and select 'Go to Folder'
4. Type (or paste): ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/
5. Open the folder with the same 'name' as your device. (i.e. same name that appears in iTunes).
6. Sort by the "date modified column"
7. Find the latest file whose name starts "MobileMail" (hopefully it should have today's date, if it doesn't then let me know if there are any files that do have todays date)
8. Right-click on it, select "copy" ... then paste the copy somewhere else you can easily find it (e.g. your Desktop)
9. Close the MobileDevice window
10. Upload the file to a file sharing site like ExpireBox or https://www.wetransfer.com/
11. PM me the upload link (as I assume you won't want to publish it publicly !)

Feel free to take a peek inside the files with a text editor to see if there's any personal information in there you want to purge or obfuscate .... but normally crash files are just that and only contain technical data.

Thanks for that comprehensive reply. Will look at that tomorrow (it is late here now) with my sons help for the file sharing thingy and will attempt to pm it to you. You are a star! Thank you in advance.

captainsmiffy,

No probs. I'm quite curious about this one because I've never seen the Mail app crash myself. It generally just happily does what it says on the tin !

If I were to hazard a guess, there may be something lurking in your Inbox that its failing to parse correctly, which leads me nicely onto...

The other thing you could do is setup a test email account somewhere else (or borrow your son's details for his, if he trusts you sufficiently ! ) .... remove your BT account settings, insert test account settings and see if you can replicate the issue there.

Theoretically the word "could" above should be replaced with "should" ....it shouldn't take too long seeing as you know your way around the iPad email settings screens by now !

Have a good evening.

I don't use the apple mail stuff with BT, I just use the ipad to get to BT mail on tweb.

But another issue might provide a clue??
One of apple's recent updates did something strange to my Accounts and Permissions/Restrictions. No idea why. To get Facetime up and running again, I had to change some of these settings.
