Problems logging in

Earlier today, I got a nice message box from Norton saying they had kindly fixed threats etc. This is nothing new, but, strangely, whenever this box appears, I have to renew my login on two sites, this being one of them.

Usually, this takes just a few minutes.....not tonight !

It has taken numerous attempts to get the process completed.

The first time was fine, at least for the first part of the process. Thereafter, no password sent to my email address and, I was presented with another email option, same name, but not me, with the end part saying @facebook etc.

I have a facebook profile, but not the email account that was sent.

Any thoughts and suggestions would be welcome please as I am concerned that such a simple procedure became so protracted, that, and the appearance of this other email account of which I have no knowledge.

Is there anyway I can remove this address please?

Many thanks in advance.

I do not know if it's coincidence: Yesterday at 8.00 PM GMT I got a warning from Norton Internet Security 2014; on my Windows 8.1 PC, of a block imposed on a "False" Adobe flash player update by Norton.

This was a special instance as I was running IE 11 in an attempt to get BBC I Player Down load to work. This is the first instance I have seen: in 3 Years, of Norton blocking anything. (Reverted to the last Backup - Its not that easy on 8.1 but its possible )

I'm normally a Firefox User Win 8.1 or Ubuntu 14.04 LTS behind a BT HomeHub Mk 3 (Yes Hummmmm)

I suspect that your PC may have been compromised. Or your EM A/C has been hacked; by a third party. Notification by Anti Virus Software, of a problem, is in its self an indication that can only be treated as a well intentioned warning.

Can we have some more details - of your set up ?

Treat the PC as compromised - Re install the Operating System and then restore your last back up and check again for nasties.

I know is a Sod of a problem, but you cannot trust a compromised PC.

I suggest that you revert to a previous backup if possible - Its a recurring problem after all these years.

CAT 111,

Thank you for your reply and advice.

My apologies for the delay in acknowledging your advice as I wished to see if any other explanations would be offered.

I spoke to my pet geek today and he suggested that, as there were it seems problems with this site on Friday, this would explain why I did not get the responses I expected.

With regard to Facebook, it seems that when you join the site, they give you an email address. As I rarely use the site, and have the bare minimum profile information, I was unaware of this.

Norton can be a pain however, the "full system scan" followed by "finding and fixing threats" which results in two sites I use, this being one as I say and both innocuous, requiring me to log in an restore / renew my password is, well, just a Norton hindrance.

Thanks again for your help however and your advice did get my attention at the time.

Thanks

Yep I'm a reluctant Norton 2014/15 User on the Windoze 8.1 PC.

Amazingly I got a msg from an aviation enthusiasts forum (Re BHX), they suggested my external IP Address; was associated with a Spam Attack historically, on Saturday last - Obviously I'm investigating this. There is a chance that I'm being spoofed - I've changed my password for the EM account as a precaution.

(All other scans are proving clear for the moment) and the offending site now lets me log in !

PPS - Anyone on PPrUne ever used EtherApe ? - more to follow on this.
