MS Office and Copy/Paste Buffer

The trusty PC has just developed an annoying habit when copying-and-pasting.

I'm very much in the habit of saying "Ah, need a copy of that...", then going to Word etc...

It used to be that I could pick something in Firefox or wherever, click "copy", then open Word or Excel or Publisher or whatever, and paste it into that.

No longer. Unless I open Word etc BEFORE I copy, the item is gone from the buffer.

The buffer is empty even if I then go to use a different bit of software (eg Paint Shop Pro).

Anyone know what might have changed, and if can change it back?

Google has remained silent on the issue, with all the permutations of words I can think of.

I've seen that too.

Clipboard manager is a toy that you'll like.

Interesting, Keef - there have been a couple of similar occasions lately I have put down to 'operator cock-up', but I wonder.

back in the days of PCTools there was one memory in the computer and all applications lived fairly successfully within that memory.

with multi users and the need for heightened security each application now loads into segregated memory. the blue screen of death occurred on NT systems when ever an application strayed into another programs segregated memory area.

I think your problem in not seeing the clipboard is from the current methods of allocating and protecting memory.

isn't clipboard a service?

Might be worth looking to see if its still functioning.

Think its clipboard or clipbook or clipnote or something like that .

It has to be allowed to interact with the desktop as well via its properties.

This is off the top of my head from years ago so may have changed.

office clip board is different as it only works inside the office products.

To go from one application to another application eg copying a article on the net across to a document there needs to be a third application to transfer the data.

True but it does touch upon how it relates to the system clipboard so a deeper reading may just touch upon some setting/option. The system clipboard can be switched off according to the developer
forum.

if it is a OS service which I pretty sure it is, it can be turned off like any other service.

It also needs to have permission to interact with the desktop which as default its allowed to do but can be turned off on purpose or by accident.

"What did you do" before it stopped working would be my second question after asking have you turned it off and on again.

Clipman's latest version is dated 2006, so probably predates most of the software on my PC.

The "Office" one doesn't look like the solution - I have no problem copying and pasting between bits of Office.

I didn't knowingly change anything - I just noticed one day that copy - open Word - paste didn't work.

Off now to have a look for "clipboard" settings in dark corners...

It'll take longer to fix than I'll ever spend going back and recopying after I've opened Word, but I don't like silly bugs.

FF 31 copy and paste to Office 2007 still working fine on my machine. Just tried it again to confirm.

I'm just too mean to pay for later Office progs that 1. I do not need and 2. I will not understand/be able to use.

FIXED IT!

In March I'd installed a PDF reader/printer that interfaced with Firefox - Foxit Reader. It got in the way of the clipboard on launch of anything Office.

I found a very old thread on an Office forum that talked about this problem and "add-ons". It suggested loading the clipboard, then starting Word by typing winword /a on the start button, and testing to see if it would paste. It would.

Foxit was the only add-on in MS Office (the 2003 version, by the way, still the best in my view). Removed that, all is well.

It's not Foxit Reader by itself; I have it and have no problems pasting text from outside Word to Word (2010). Must be because you're trying to use Office 2003 with the latest Foxit and win 7!
