Getting back on line

It was suggested on this forum that I go for a dongle as I may not be in this house long. What's the best way to find out a/ what to do next and b/ how to find out if the aerial will work for this address. CO14 8SP, since I've been told my T-Mobile phone's number of signal bars is no indicator of its use as a BB link.

Being off-line is like being lobotomized. I'm FONing at the moment, but that's about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. I can just about check my emails . . . if I'm lucky, and since I use my computer for even landline phoning, I'm kind of desperate.

I don't need mobile broadband, just feeding the home computer.

Ta, muchly.

Oh, and when I say desperate, I'm at the Rivetess' home to send this so you can see how important it is.

You could try sticking the RootMetrics app on your phone and see what that comes up with (basic online version here available to play with in a web browser, stick your postcode into the search section and experiment switching between the providers)

Its not an exact tool by any means, but for an initial quick feel its probably ok.

My guess though, without looking at site above, just based on googol maps, given you seem to be in the middle of nowhere, is Vodafone is likely to be your best bet as they tend to have coverage where others don't.

Hello there, LR.

We, too were plunged into the internet-less void this week when the people installing (totally unwanted and un needed) water and sewer lines severed our link to 15mbps internet.

In their defense, said line is 1/4 mile long, laid flat on the ground across a road, two driveways, two front lawns and four vacant lots. A neighborhood confab yielded one house which had been spared, and we suggested that we should all put lawn chairs in her front yard and ask her to share the key for her wireless router.

The following day, she was out and some of the rest of us were back.

In the interim, and perhaps this might help, my better techy half reminded me that my cell phone can create a 'hot spot' to run my laptop even without our usual wireless internet. It saved me a 10 mile drive to the nearest library and carried the day until service was restored at fin towers south.

It happened to occur during a banking transaction reminding me, not for the first time, just how dependent on the internet we here have become.

Mmmm . . . as you know, in Texas, my neighbors allowed me to haul power from their home for five days after my home was cut off and the neighbor on the other side mowed my lawns. Here, in this wilderness I grew up in, the folks next door show enough spare power to cook a chicken with (on inSSIDer) but are loth to allow me hook into their router despite them not using a tenth of their bandwidth and even offering to pay half their monthly bill. I'm having serious thoughts about heading back to the US and taking the risk with the medical issues. August, and I put the heating on tonight. Being homesick has its limits.

I'm still on my pal's FON link, so may be cut off. Hope tomorrow is a better day.

mixture, I'm looking at all options and will re-read your post when tonight's anesthetic wears off.
