I pad question

I've been trying for ages to get Google Images to work on my I Pad (air) there should be black camera icon on the right hand side of the text box, but I can't get it to appear, any ideas ?

Don't get the icon either. On the Google app I typed in "images", tapped on "Google images" and then typed "pretty". Got Bush and Obama among other cute things!

With Safari "Images" comes up as a Google option; no black icon.

I think it may be because googoo have not yet fully rolled out updates to fully support devices running iOS 7.

As far as I can tell from a bit of interweb research, the process is underway and they are aware of the issues apparently.

I know why you are asking this question.

Expect a PM in the next couple of minutes.

I've got another question re ipad air wi fi cellular.

I'm going on hols to Jamaica soon and I want to use the internet without using the hotels wi fi service ( it costs a fortune) I understand I need to buy a SIM card but I don't know what to ask for.
any help would be hugely appreciated thanks S7

I don't know what to ask for
You want "a pay as you go nano-SIM with maximum data"

If necessary, reinforce the point to the oily sales rep that you don't give a about the number of minutes or texts....

Are iPads SIM-locked? or can you get the PAYG SIM from Jamaica for use in Jamaica (which would be by far and away the cheapest option for your use).

Neither iPhones or iPads are SIM-locked these days (infact I think iPads never were anyway). They are both sold without SIMs or contracts.

Depends where you get them. My iPhone was SIM locked to T-Mobile(EE) until I paid a fee to have it unlocked, so I could use a Brazil SIM in it when I travelled there earlier this year.

If you buy from an Apple Store or from the online Apple Store, you can be sure it is unlocked already, otherwise you can't.

Yes, well, I wouldn't know because as far as I'm concerned there is very little point indeed in getting your iPhone/iPad via your mobile phone operator unless you enjoy being locked into 24/36 month contracts and simply paying for your iPhone/iPad via amortisation.

There is very little reason not to buy directly from Apple, and indeed, if you see "new" iPhones/iPads at more than 5% less than what Apple charge for them, I would be very suspicious indeed of how kosher they are unless the seller is large,well-known and trustworthy and may well be exercising further economies of scale.

I'm on hols now in Jamaica and did as suggested ie nano-SIM with maximum data it works a treat and cost well under £10 bargain !!
The hotel charges $5 per hour for wi-fi and it only works in the lobby, one quick question, I've noticed using cellular on the I pad runs the battery down very quickly any ideas on how to extend the battery life ? thanks stu.

Check what apps you've got running in the background (double click on the home button and swipe up the stuff you don't want open). Stuff running in the background is harmless, but if you are after maximum battery life conservation, you'll want to quit any apps that regularly poll any radio interfaces (GPS/Wifi/Cellular).

The wifi+cellular iPads have a location services feature, you should almost certainly turn that off since that will turn off GPS etc. which is another radio interface, and quite a hungry one at that.

No worries. Also, if you know you're just going to be using cellular (e.g. you're on the move or whatever) , you should consider turning off WiFi.

Also, if you want to scrape the bottom of the barrel, you can also consider messing around with the screen brightness settings.

(If you're not running up to date software, you might contemplate that too, since they no doubt put some energy enhancement tweaks into their updates)

Edit to add: Have revised my comment about location services above, looking at the specs the iPad does indeed have GPS on the Wifi+cellular models.
