BA iPad rollout - connect to base?

It's official now:
All 3,600 British Airways Pilots to Get iPads

Will they be connecting to base through a VPN? (Virtual Private Network).

If setup sensibly they will ONLY connect via VPN to a VPN server on BA's own network. I.e. the iPads will only operate online as if they are within the corporate network. The iPads will be managed thoroughly through management tools run by the IT support team. The users will only be able to use the iPad for the specific tasks it is intended for, and will be unable to change the configuration of the iPads themselves.

Nothing much new, apart from the 'tech' - I believe ?Britannia? had 'electronic' cockpit comms to receivers on stands at base (??destinations??- not sure) way back in the 80/90s. Good to see, though. The way forward.

So no social networking or reading the Daily Mail whilst in flight? Shame

Download it before you go and read it in flight?

No need, just nick one from the pile at the gate. Passengers have good taste and leave the Daily Hate for the drivers.

Cumbria County Council purchased iPads a couple of years ago for its road mending gang. The idea was that jobs could be e-mailed to them and reports sent back via the G3 network
Unfortunately they overlooked one essential fact of life: Cumbria is hilly and the G3 coverage is poor......
The roadmenders had to drive to the top of the nearest hill each morning in an attempt to collect the days work schedule....

Thanks for the replies and excuse the delay in mine - some sort of mid-winter festival thing intervened.

@MacBoero - that's a big "if".

I'll rephrase my question then - will BA pilots continue to take their own laptops / tablets down-route with them?
