Network printer - cannot get it to work
Hello All,
I've a DLink DIR 615 router to which I've connected my Mac, Brother HL-5280DW (both hardwire) and my Toshiba Satellite Pro (Vista for Business). All 'tinternet stuff works well but try as I might, I cannot get the printer to talk to the computers to print. I've gone through the system setup through the admin login but can see no options for settings for sharing printers. Surprisingly, a search on the web has proved fruitless; any ideas?

First make sure that the printer gets the same TCP/IP address every time. Get the MAC address and in the Dlink set up a static IP address to that MAC address. (something like 192.168.1.200)
Load the printer driver on each PC that's going to access it and modify the properties of the printer to add a TCP/IP port that is set with the IP address assigned in Dlink setup. That's how I've done it some time now. I know that others will have different methods, but this has worked for me.

This worked for me.
Hardwired Setup (for computers connected the router via an Ethernet cable)
1) Insert the disk and from the Easy Setup Navigator that auto starts, select Software Installation (it takes it a while to get going).
2) Now select Network Installation (even if you aren't making it part of a network, just connecting it to a router) and select next.
3) Now select Local Installation and click next.
4) You will now be presented with a select a printer screen, and if the PC is "hardwired" to the router the 1320 will come up and you can select it (putting a tick in the box if it hasn't done so by default), before you click next make a note of the IP address and keep it for the install of any wireless connected computers. Now click next.
5) Now you are asked to enter Printer settings, you can select whether you want to share this printer and whether you want to set this as your default printer. Once you've made your choices click Next
6) You're now brought to a screen which allows you to select if you want to install the users manual and system to order further laser toner, by default they are both selected, un tick what you don't want and select Next
7) The printer drivers are now installed (plus anything you left ticked, manuals etc) and you are finally presented with Congratulations screen and given the option to Print a Test Page! Print the test page as it will give you information to setup manually any machines connected wirelessly to the router.
Wireless Computer Setup
The setup is the same if your computer is connected to your router wirelessly up to point 4 above at this stage you will not have a printer to select so;
5) Click the add printer button from this screen as the Dell won't appear in the selection list at this stage.
6a) Leave the default port type as TCP/IP,
6b) Port Name you should find this on the test page you hopefully printed out, it's the 6th item down under the information below description.
6c) Enter IP address now this doesn't appear on the test page (a shame really) so hopefully you copied it down earlier, otherwise you'll need to go into your routers admin screen to find out what it is. It's also a good idea to tell the router to "reserve" that IP for the printer (each router does that differently). Once you've enter the IP address select next.
7) You are brought back to the Select a Printer screen, this time though the Dell appears in the list with a tick next to its name (provided your connected to the router and the printer is turned on an also connected. Select next.
8) Now you are asked to enter Printer settings, you can select whether you want to share this printer and whether you want to set this as your default printer. Once you've made your choices click Next

You may want to try seeing if port 9100 is open on the router as it may simply implement a config-less RAW (read after write) printing gateway. There are plenty of guides to setting up RAW TCP/IP printing on the web.
However, a quick google did point me to one thing... It's been mentioned that the 655 is the model which supports printer sharing (not the 615), that DLink have simply used the same case to cut costs and that the USB port on the 615 is not actually connected to anything...
