Airbus CBT, no sound or animations on Mac

Hi,

I have my simulator coming up and am required to review some topics of the Airbus 320 CBT. My airline provides the Airbus CBT online and I've never had any problems with it on my PC. However, I've recently purchased a Mac and since the CBT requires internet explorer I've been trying to run it from parallels and boot camp. It doesn't work very well however. Regardless of if I use parallels or a clean boot camp installation (I've tried windows XP and 7) I can load the pages and see the pictures but I don't get any animations or sound. I feel I've tried everything. I've downloaded all updates (flash and windows) and checked that the drivers are the latest versions but no luck. When I try to load the webpage I get a message saying that there's a problem loading the LMS API. Does anyone have a clue what might be the problem? When I run the CBT from my PC it works without problems.

Best wishes
sk61bulldog

Edit: I might add that other sounds work without problem. Youtube, videos, games etc. works just like it should. I've only had a problem with the CBT.

Have you tried VMWare Fusion ? I've never gone back to Parallels after I discovered it.

Also, have you checked the tech reqs for the CBT .... you might need some additional obscure plugins ?

There should be absolutely no reason you can't run it under boot camp, because it's 100% native.... and I'd be very surprised it it's not possible to run it under VMWare/Parallels.

Have you tried logging in as someone with Administrator rights when trying ? Some moronic developers can't manage to code without requiring full privileges.

Hi Mixture and thanks for your reply,

I've checked the technical requirements and the only thing it mentions is to download the latest Flash version which I've done. I've even tried an older version as well without result. I tried running IE with administrator rights and that didn't change anything either. I've also tried disabling all security features. I'm thinkining just like yourself that it should work the same on a Mac in Windows as on a PC. Everything is the same but on the Mac for some reason I just cannot get the sound or the animations. On my old PC (or any other PC I've tried for that matter) it just works. I've never had to install or change anything. It has just worked.

Internet Explorer is just Microsoft's own web browser and it's quite common to see it specified when in actual fact any compatible web browser will do. The reason the writers of the CBT software have designed it to be opened in a web browser and not as it's own program is so that it has cross platform compatibility.

If you have not already done so try running it in OSX on Apple's Safari or Mozilla Firefox (another web browser that you can put on your Mac or on a PC). There is a excellent chance that it will work and if it does not try the following:

On the top bar: Safari > Preferences... > Advanced. Then tick the box for "show develop menu..."

Back on the top bar: Develop > User Agent > Then select the version of Internet Explorer that the CBT software has told you too use.

Safari is now emulating Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 (or whatever you selected). This mode is usually for Mac users who are web page authors to test their product to make sure those using other web browsers can see and use the page correctly. However it also comes in handy when using software or viewing pages that have been written badly and have compatibility issues.

Hi Pelikanpete,

Thanks for your help. I tried doing what you told me but I guess the CBT is written rather poorly. When I try to open it with the User Agent mode, regardless of which version of IE I try, I just get a black page. That is also the case if I try with Safari or any other browser for that matter. It really seems that only IE will work, but without the sound or the animations.

Nothing I'm afraid. No error messages at all. I'll try to install VMWare later today to see if that makes a difference.

Hmm.. this is a curious spot of bother you've got yourself into !

Will be interesting to see if the same occurs in VMware.

Same thing in VMWare. Sound in everything else but no sound or animations in the CBT. Now I've just swallowed my pride and am packing my old Dell in the nightstop bag as well. I'm starting to think if there's something in the way that the soundcard is integrated on the motherboard of a Mac that is different from a PC but that's a bit too advanced for me

Perhaps some kind of missing plug-in in the browser is needed.
