This program keeps popping up on startup and I can't get rid of it. I've tried changing the startup list (a recent subject) but I can't actually find the program on my computer, certainly not in my startup options!
I'm runningg Windows ME with office 2000.
I'm guessing it's attatched to an already installed program and that's why I can't find it (even with the search function).
Can anyone tell me where it comes from and, more importantly how to get rid of it. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Presume you have not run Msconfig. Go to start - run, and type in msconfig. You will find a list of running processes which initialise on boot. Just untick the check box on any program you dont want to run on boot. Hope this helps.

It's not even on the list. I'm thinking it's piggybacked from one of my current startup apps but I'm lost.

There is a program called Startcop which is quite good in this situation! Have a look at <a href="http://www.pchelp911.com/files.htm" target="_blank">http://www.pchelp911.com/files.htm</a> to download it

Why not try disabling each 'launch' program in turn.. surely this should identify which application is launching your unwanted intruder. Apart from the msconfig route, dont forget to look in your startup folder as well.

Open Regedit, and look in the following locations:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Run-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \RunServices

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \RunServices-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Run

Tell me if you find it there. I had a site for looking up what app may have caused this to be listed in tack manager, however at this time that site's list of apps is disabled, he may be updating it at the moment. Sorry.

thanks for the reply. I couldn't find the program in regedit as you directed.
When I right click on the window the details are given as POPChecker version 1.0 1997.
As a guess I'm wondering if it has anything to do with Office 97 (previously installed).
If you can dig up that site it may be of help.

You can easily get rid of this POPchecker once you de-install Norton Anti Virus.
During installation NAV has changed your mail routing through it's virus checker which is called POPchecker....
Don't know whether you are now still interested to remove it.....

I've already uninstalled Norton from my computer (it was cr@p). Is there any way I can get nav to reroute my mail?

On the issue of Norton changing you mail server settings, you can go back into your email client and ensure they are what you want set.

Brilliant. I was always too scared to knock off anything that I wasn't entirely sure of in my startup options.
However....
I feel like a complete moron as I still can't track down popchecker.
I uninstalled Norton (months ago) completely and now use PC-cillin98 and I cant find any mention of it in the source folder.
How can something occur at startup but I can't find it in msconfig?

I think than it has to be a subroutine of another program that you are starting up. for all windows start up app's are in the registry settings I provided above.

Hmmm, a strange issue to be sure. Did you go back into your email program and replace the server names with your ISP's ?

It was attached to my multimedia keyboard app.
Trial and error in the end (plus plenty o' reboots).
