Had a quick search but couldn't find this problem. Bear with me 'cos I am not the brightest marble when it comes to pooters.

Facebook (my bit not the home page) tells me that I need a newer version of Flash Player. It says When I try to download newer version it says I have to shut down Firefox.

So, I use Internet Explorer to download and install new version of Flash Player. Using Internet Explorer, I have no problems with my bit of Facebook.

When I now try to get into my Facebook using Firefox, it continues to tell me Can somebody help a thickie please???

Not a thickie.
This is buggy software, either Firefox or Adobe's. Seems no-one is prepared to "own" the problem, but you most certainly are not alone.
My guess is you are using Vista with Firefox 3.
Workarounds (posted in the linked Mozilla thread) include trying out the Beta of Flash Player 10, or reverting to Firefox 2. More extreme, and personal opinion only (but shared by a few) would be to ditch Vista and use XP.

Thanks Tarq, but should have mentioned I am on XP.

Flash decides which version you need by the browser you use, so when IE was the conduit, they sent out the IE version.

To pick up the Firefox version, rather than running the file from its location, save the file to your computer, wait for download completion then run the install. Use Firefox to do this.

Are you using Firefox 2 or 3?
I'm using 2, and the Adobe updater assures me I'm using the latest version, which, in my case is 9.0.124.
Should the method above work (you may need to click on a warning at the top of the browser window re installing a plug-in) be sure to uninstall the old version first using this uninstaller.

Can confirm that I had a similar problem...XP Sp3 with Firefox3....overcome with actions as advised by vapilot2004
