Computer dies

I put a parallel and serial port into a Dell computer running Windows ME and it worked well for about a month, then the computer died. It would not respond to the power button and did nothing when pressed. I took everything off and before pulling it apart pressed the button again, and I could hear it start up. So I changed the printer from the new port to the original LPT1 and everyting worked again. . .Having tried to find guidance for this problem and failed, can anyone point me to the correct fix? I assume it is a conflict, or maybe a power deficiency, but have no clue as how to find out.

My neighbour had a weird problem a bit like this..PC ran fine for a while then all of a sudden it made strange squaking noises when attempting power up.. .It turned out he was using a two pin mains plug which had worked fine for years with his previous PC, but the new one needed an earth!
