Question e-mail from a Mac

A friend of mine recently sent me an e-mail containing a jpeg photograph as an attachment. I am totally unable to open this as there is no file extension on the attachment and putting .jpg (or ."anything else") on the end doesn't work!

A colleague told me that it is because the mail originated from a Mac which has a more rigorous e-mail structure than an IBM type PC (like mine). He knows no way of opening it other than on another Mac.

Has anyone got any ideas on how I could get round this?

Thanks for the reply, Diplomat. He tried sending it again, in .pcx format. Again, it appeared at my end without any file extension on it so my machine still refused to open it. I've now found a colleague who has access to a mac on his degree course so he's suggested that I mail it to him and he can print it off and give me the hard copy. Wonderful thing this paperless world, isn't it!
