There have a been a couple of threads where Linux has been mentioned (explicitly or otherwise!).
For anyone considering Linux, there is a very useful website that details and de-mystifies the distributions here

Frequently asked questions

bnt has recently suggested that Google is an excellent way to search PPRuNe for those pesky TLAs and abbreviations of 3 characters or less!

Simply place the search term(s) FIRST in the Google search list, then the site in the form site:www.pprune.org
- e.g. ppl caa site:www.pprune.org

You can also use the Advanced Search, and explicitly place www.pprune.org as the ONLY site to search.

Thanks for the tip bnt!

Here's another little tip: if you're trying to describe a Windows system on the forum, but references to hard drives turn in to Smilies, such as C, check the "Disable smilies in text" box before hitting "Submit Reply".

Help with Malware

The nasty bagle worm can inhibit safemode by deleting the reg keys in XP. This link will provide reg files for XP SP 1-3 to restore the safeboot option.

Norman 2009 seems to be a useful malware removal tool - it can run from a USB stick/CDROM and does not need to be installed. It picks up malware that even the 'industry standard' Malwarebytes does not.

XP Shortcut Icons

I've been 'losing a few' lately, icons for pdf files being a case in point, and after much Googling I have discovered:

1) XP does not have the old shelliconcache file that you used to delete and rebuild.
2) The way to do it is to boot into safe mode and then back into 'normal' - fixed.
