Win98 Desktop problem

Bonsoir,

Got a bit of a problem.

I've got an icon that I can't delete. It is a System Folder and was for a now unused internet account.

Please help.

Is it an actual system folder or just a shortcut to a system folder?

I wondering what it is even doing there in the first place. I could either need to be moved to the Windows Directory or just need a change of its attributes and then deleted.

I have seen similar and they can be an absolute a#$e pain to get rid of.

Try right clicking on the folder - properties - then seeing if it is set to be read only or archive - if so untick any boxes OK then try to delete it.

The only other way would be to start up your PC into Safe mode or similar then try delete from here.

What is the folder called?

It may be better to check in here prior to deleting - just in case.

Thanks for the answers....

However, not having a lot of luck with this.

The folder ISN'T a shortcut. I can't move it anywhere and I cant rename it!

Its not a big deal really, but I sort of would like it gone.

When I click on properties I get a warning that says...."The service profile is damaged. Re-install the system profile"

When I click on delete i get some stuff about the system profile.

Keep the ideas coming!!

How's your DOS??
Restart in DOS proper (NOT a windows DOS box) CD W98\Desktop.
DIR
CD (to the specific folder)
DEL *.*
job done ...... but be very careful that you know what you're doing - mind you, UNDELETE can save the day!!

Concur with CJ. Dos'll get rid of it. I had something similar not long ago. Had a file on the Desktop that wouldn't even let me look at the properties. Couldn't shift it using Explorer in safe Mode either.

But be wary of Del *.*! You could delete too much. Actually make it Del [the file name you want rid of] or Del [and the first few letters of the file name followed by *.*].

First, try it in a Command Prompt window. (in Safe Mode as per FSD).

The following instructions involve changing your registry. Back up your system with a restore point first, then follow them EXACTLY.

Click the Start menu, select Run, enter "regedit" (without quotes) and click OK.

Click the plus [+] icon next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Click the plus [+] icon next to Software.
Click the plus [+] icon next to Microsoft.
Click the plus [+] icon next to Windows.
Click the plus [+] icon next to CurrentVersion.
Click the plus [+] icon next to Explorer.
Click the plus [+] icon next to Desktop.
Click the plus [+] icon next to NameSpace.

One-by-one, click the folder icons in the list below NameSpace.

On the right side of the screen, you'll see in the "Data" column folders with the names of your desktop icons - e.g. "My Documents" and "Recycle Bin". One of these folders will display the name of the icon you want to remove.

Select the appropriate folder and hit the Delete key on your keyboard. Click "Yes" when asked if you wish to delete this key.

Quit out of the Registry Editor.
