The Caribbean and Latin AmericaAviation has been around South America and the Caribbean since the early days. A forum for aviators from that part of the world.
Yeah the older 767s from the 90s will eventually phase out as the 787 arrive, but the brand spanking new 767s (10 in all I think) purchased over the last 2 years will continue in service for 10 years at least.
In 4 yrs time there will be a mix of 318/9/20, 767, 787 and 340.
Unless this has changed in the last 18 months, you do not 'have' to be Argentine to work for LAN Argentina. I was interviewed and offered Captain position about 16 months ago while residing in the country. I am married to a Porteno but not a citizen myself. I do however posess a CUIL which is basically equivalent to a work permit/social security number. Things may have changed since that time since I did not accept the lower pay scale and am no longer residing there so I am basing my comment upon past times. Good luck.
Hello everyone, I am a Regional Airline FO in the US with 1000 Total Time, 280 Jet. I am furloughed and dont know when the airline will be calling back. I was born in Venezuela but live in USA, and I am completely fluent in spanish and english. I am interested and thinking about the possibility to fly for a stable company such as LAN Chile. If any current LAN Chile pilots out here can post what the hiring req's are and any contact information to send a recruiter or HR department.
Alejandro, I'm from Venezuela too. From what I understand there is always lots of work in Venezuela, I hear ASERCA is supposed to be starting a grond school sometime next month, Venezolana is also rumored to be hiring.... but I guess its not LAN eh?
Anyone knows what is the salary for a First Officer in LAN?How is it compared to payment from other companies like TACA or COPA,what these companies pay?
I hope im not too far away from the topic.
Salary for an entry F/O in LAN is (based on march 2007 or so and previously to all these economic crisis there have been) is around 1,500 USD, give or take 150 USD. Pretty good for Chile's living costs, specially when several new F/Os that get in are in their 20s still living with their family and with around 200 hours. With the US dollar fluctuating a lot this value would be something like 900,000 CLP (Chilean pesos) give or take 100,000 CLP. After around three years I believe it goes up to 1,500.000 CLP.
Check the site posted in page 2 (I think) of this thread, it gives some clues about the payment for F/Os and Capts. Not sure how much TACA and COPA pay but given the fact I have answer so many questions hehe, I'd like to ask if those airlines would hire a chilean pilot?
I am quite sure, in LAN Chile at least, they don't take DEC applications.
Official minimums for chileans are CPL, ICAO English 4, and IFR. Foreigns are probably the same but you MUST have your licence converted. It MUST be a CPL issued by DGAC Chile. They won't convalidate it for you and not even get an interview before. I did have a personal pre-interview before getting the CPL converted and this was stressed to me that needed to be done before continuing.
You all know english but you also need to take that RELTA english exam even if you are converting a licence from an english-speaking country.
I've heard flight time is not really a factor. Of course it is in the personal level as you have more experience. I don't know if they have preference in chilean born applicants plus the fact that low time guys maybe are easier to fit into their profile, specially when their psychological exam seems to be the hardest part of the whole entry process. I have heard however, that they first look at chilean CVs and then foreign ones.
I'm an A-320 Captain, been flying in Taca Peru for over 9 years (since the very beginning). I have friends in Lan Peru that fly the A-319 and they all are pretty tired, they work too much and get little rest. My advise is: Join Taca Peru. Even though new F/Os get little pay, the salary increases in steps while they accumulate more total flight time. A senior F/O (over 4000 hrs total time) earns about $4000, NET salary plus about $600 monthly perdiem. Not so bad, huh? A captain gets about $5500 plus the same perdiem. A Flight Instructor gets about $1500 more if there are trainees available. The latter is my case. We fly about 75 hours a month, all routes are outside Peru (except CUZ, 6 times a week). Great routes. Spare time. Good pay for Latin America. And Taca Peru is recruiting right now. Send your CV to TACA PERU. Cheers!
JP is right, LPE pilots on the 320 work very hard indeed. However, recently the Union has made some substantial progress for the pilot group on a whole. That combined with mass resignations in the last few years has made the current work force a valued asset. Recent progress includes:
Domestic flights are limited to a max of 5 cycles per day. Guaranteed 8 days off per month. (So far so good) Publication of your roster no later than the 25th of each month (usually out on the 24th) An extra months pay in Feb (apart from Jul and Dec) as a bonus.
I would apply to both, and see who had what to offer. LPE 767 is way better than TACA 320, more pay, more per-diems and way better destinations (MIA, LAX, MAD and IAD soon). However if I had to choose between 320 in both companies in both fleets, it would be a tough decision. Also, TACA has no union representation, and for the UPG to Capt require 3000 hrs on type, LPE require 3500 Total time (recently lowered from 4000). Also TACA pays per flight hour and LPE has a basic with productivity pay at 70 hours. As far as I know TACA is not hiring expats. Food for thought.
Saludos,
OW
PS. LPE 767 will get you semi-glass, heavy/ wide body, international experience and Cold weather, NAT, ETOPS and CAT qualifiactions.
Boss, thanks for your info, I didn't even know TACA Peru was hiring. I was until a few months ago a 320 Captain in the US, of course unemployed now, and looking to work closer to the US or Argentina, (where I am from, no Argentine License though). Applied to Lan Peru back in July 2008, but they don't seem to care about me, not even a respond saying, "we got your paper work", from Leslie Jara. I have @8500+ ttl, (@1600+ ttl A320), and like I said unemployed and trying to avoid Middle East,China, India, etc... Can you provide me an email where to send my CV? Thanks
Hello guys, I have a question: Any email address from TACA is not suppossed to have the word TACA after the @? I don't know, but the email address seems a little fishy, don't you think?
P.S. FYI, I'm in need of a secure address for TACA PERU as well.
Cheers,
AA
