F35 Ramifications

I know of at least five sub- contraters located in Canada who if unable to move to the USA {if America lets them!} will be closing their doors. This high school dance instructor has a lot to learn about the nature of the interconection between global companies, in particular the aviation/aerospace part of the economy. The F35 seems to be a "dog", but but this is not a decision based on the aircraft's merits, or lack of same, good luck to those trying to sell the C Series in the USA after this decision!

Has anyone taken a look at contract cancellation costs?

If it's anything like the contracts for our two new mothball hangars in build at Rosyth, you might find it's 25% more expensive to cancel than to continue......

Donkey 497, this was also true in the case of the CF 105 Arrow, when all the costs of buying the bloody junker F101B {"Look, there is a 101, banking as if to turn"} along with workers comp et all, not to mention the brilliant folks lost to NASA, and project Mercury, to put a man on the moon, along with US aviation industry, it would have made more sense to build the CF105, {even the PM came to the same conclusion in his dotage}The loss of Canadas brightest and best turned this nation into a large US dominated "branch plant".

Bitches and Gripes.

Does anyone in government remember what the first EH 101 cancellation cost us?
I am no fan of the F-35. However---
Something has to be done about how we buy equipment.
The Cyclone is just another example.
Fly by wire for the Cyclone. Why do we need that?
I have lots of time on the S-92 and can't see the advantage/$$$$ ratio. Then the boys add every "Wowie Zowie" piece of kit they can find.
Also if we are going to pay development costs for fly by wire Canada should have rights to the tech and get $$ for any downstream sales of fly by wire on either S-92 or military variants.
These folks can not even buy a truck without wanting extra "cool stuff".

If you believe what a politician says to get elected, is what happens after the election then I have a bridge to sell you .

Once the new government is sworn in it will say that the previous administration got it wrong and double the order of shiney new jets to "whip out " when the old ones run out of air frame time very soon .

Although they should take another look at the Y23

No cancellation cost as they were no commitment to buy..... new bid soon, it may still win, but DND really wants a twin engine.... We'll see

A twin-engine, combat-proven with real multi-role capability this time.... Now the french Rafale holds all the cards
Or once again they will buy anything, provided it's coming from the south

The F35 is a seriously expensive (well overpriced) item. Sometimes you just have to accept that it is better, in the long run, to cut your losses.

I hope the us cancels the f 35.

If it was made by one company, it could cost 20% of the going rate. It is a massive waste of resources.

No cancellation cost as they were no commitment to buy.....
As JSF partner, Canada has "invested" more than C$250 million into the F-35 program, so that is the effective direct cancellation cost. The indirect costs to Canadian companies from loss of future business could be in the billions, however.
The F35 is a seriously expensive (well overpriced) item. Sometimes you just have to accept that it is better, in the long run, to cut your losses.
Yet from a total cost perspective the F35 is might actually be cheaper for Canada to procure than some of the alternatives being talked about, such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and the Dassault Rafale.

Older contenders like the F/A-18E Super Hornet will likely be out of production in the next 5 years. (The Super Hornet's 20th anniversary is next month!)

Canada can save money by procuring something like the Super Hornet, but buying older technology is not a bargain if it means having to upgrade again sooner rather than later.
I hope the us cancels the f 35.
That's not going to happen, especially since the F35 has now entered operational service. From a symbolic / political perspective, the F35 is going forward no matter what.

Services from the US, UK, Italy, Netherlands, Australia, Norway, Japan, South Korea, etc., are all committed to buy various versions of the F35 in large quantities.

You seem to be very knowledgeable in procurement.
Can you name the countries that are planning to have only one type of fighter aircraft that are slower than their present and future potential enemies/rivals aircraft ?

More relevant question: the number of potential enemy fighters which can outrun an AIM-120 AMRAAM (Mach 4): zero.

But anyway, Australia plans to replace their entire complement of fighters (Hornets and Super Hornets) by the F-35A. They were forced to buy the Super Hornets as an interim measure to replace their antique F-111s.

Norway, the Netherlands, etc., will similarly operate only F-35s in the future, replacing their entire fighter inventory with a single model.

Any Intel on the success of the new Russian 'microwave shield 'So far they have deployed it as a ground defense system anti-missile dome. Even sold some to the Iranians. Have they managed to get one airborne yet ?

The Americans have been spending a lot of money on laser weapons and the seventh generation fighters might look a lot like science fiction stuff just now .But if they get some of the new super fast secure quantum super computers light enough to use for targeting it could be a game changer.

The irony is that Canada is exporting that quantum computer technology from a start up in Vancouver
