Flying in the Arctic

Pilots

I would be interested in Arctic operations and the Twin Otter on skies.

  • What is the process on communication with i.e. stations?
  • What is the techniqie starting in the ice with a ski version (and is there a difference to the ski/wheel version)?
  • After landing I understand that you cool down the skies before taxiing to the final parking position. Is there a check list for this?
Thanks
Andre

Can't speak directly to the Twotter, but, FWIW, on a 185 (on wheelskis), the idea was to land, and then, if you were parking for the night, to have several wooden slats/poles lying parallel to each other on the snow. You'd drive the plane up onto the poles, which then held the bottom of the skis off the snow, preventing them from freezing in. Depending on how hard the snow was, you could also pump the wheels down/skis up, and have the plane sitting on its wheels all night.

- VHF, or HF if applicable.
- Props feathered, so no forward thrust. Bring them out of feather when they are both started. No.
- Correct. Slow taxi after landing to let the skis cool before stopping, otherwise the snow melts. No checklist...
