Thumbs up MONARCH A321

Heard about the emergency landing it did this morning on a way from Luton to Tenerife. Pilots reported the problem with the engine, was diverted into Stansted Airport. Safe landing, all well.

Emergency landing? OH my GOD!!! I've never had one! I wonder how it feels? What goes through your mind if you are the pilot, CC or PAX?

To the crew who were on board: WELL DONE!!!!!
I guess pax are very grateful, too!

WELL DONE!

In thirty-five (35) years of slf flying, have had two & 1/2 emergency landings. The first two both involved engine fires; fires put out with bottles. First one, 707 we diverted into MEM on a DAL-DUL route. Deplaned and waited all day for evening flight to pick us up. After FO comes into cabin & looks out window at engine; returns to Flt Deck; Capt PAs fire/out now/landing at MEM/all is "safe" and OK. This pax very happy upon landing MEM. Not so happy to wait all day though. Second flt. was ORD-DAL. 727. Capt just PAs we 'had" an engine fire; now out; will continue to DAL to land. Night flight this one. This pax not worried cause now "experienced" in engine fires procedures. Landing at DAL had fire trucks chase us down runway; red lights flashing in the dark. Now - this pax is worried!! Shouldn't have been though - we taxi to terminal and deplane; I wondering why all the red flashing lights. the 1/2?? Takeoff from Harlingen, Tx going to DFW, hear very loud scrapping noise; plane rocks slightly; go round; fly past tower and then Capt announces unknown problem on takeoff. Tower tells him visual looks fine. We go north to SAT and land taxi to terminal. This pax very very wondering what the hell is wrong with airplane. Capt keeps doing PA that all is fine but will land at SAT and take "take a look". Turns out pilot did NOT clear approach lights on takeoff and plane wiped out the lights and left nice wrinkles/dents in bottom of airplane.

So far, all my landings have been "walkaways".

Have had many "go arounds" and and some of those really scared the sh_t out of me. Go arounds are a lot worse than the odd fire and lights bashing. Flying in severe thunderstorm areas; lightening everywhere; thunder claps easy to hear; plane jerking ALL OVER THE SKY (right/left; up/down; sometimes both at the same time) now that can scare one to pieces. I mean really scare you since Capt can't "see" bad air!!

Thunderstorm flying tops the list followed by certain go arounds (trying to land in really severe cross winds/windshear alarms going off) cause if wingtip touches ground it is all over. Had a YOUNG/BOLD Capt try TWO of these approaches one night in early 90s. Diverted to OKC and I got off the plane cause I had "no faith" in the Capt's safety judgement. 35 years of pax flying - got lots of stories.
