Dos that include 787, or just a330? Just wondering because surely it is fair to offer all crew the chance to get higher hour, longer slip trips?

When you are employed by the business you will appreciate that even though it may seem unfair at the end of the day it comes down to commercial decisions. The business owns the flying and aircraft and will place you where you are commercially viable. Therefore if that is the mainline fleet even though you may not have access to long range flying and additional pay like on the A380 fleet that decision is made by the business for commercial reasons. i understand you would like to be placed onto the fleet to maximise your income but it just doesnt work like that. Thats not to say you wont have the opportunity in the future.

As for the 787 no one even knows how this will be crewed and under what conditions until the information is released by the business and the union therefore i wouldnt worry too much about the 787 just yet no one even knows where the crew will be based.

Thank you galleyhag, I am glad that you answered my question honestly. I know mainline will have exciting routes, which is a plus!
I got an offer so your information will help me make an informed decision without having any unrealistic expectations, and I am grateful to have the experience to make a decision about this.

Parking

Does anyone know what to do about parking for Sydney training? I don't plan on driving every day but for early starts/late finishes I think it's safer, but in Alexandria parking is a total nightmare

Congratulations Mn64 - you finally made it. What is your start date? Parking is provided at Mascot but at Alexandria you might be best getting public transport! Well done again - sounds like you've finally been successful in getting to ground school!!

Hi Ash! Yes I will be Sydney based and will start next month.
It's all been really exciting - it's taken more than 1 year for this entire application process to complete!

There are not a lot of routes where overtime would be paid therefore to be on the safe side you can bank on the $1400.00 per fortnight plus allowances in local currency. After year 1 the base salary increases slightly.

On the A380 fleet as this is flown to long range routes you will be paid overtime on just about every trip therefore your base pay remains the same $1400.00 after tax plus incidental payment and overtime therefore if you did 2 trips in a pay period your could expect to receive in your bank account anywhere from $1600.00-$1800.00 per fortnight maybe more but you have to remember the only consistent component will be your base pay. On top of that allowances paid in local currency.

In regard to allowances its very complex to explain as it is calculated on Breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack with a total if you were in a slip port covering all those meals. However the business provides meals onboard say inbound and outbound to/from a slip port therefore you may only receive part of the total payment. AUD $200.00 per day is about right if you are on the A380 fleet the average I would say is between $150.00-$200.00. Remember you have to pay for all your food, drinks, etc etc from the allowance and suffer exchange rate losses or profits when you convert your allowance back to Australian dollars.

As an example if you were on a 4 Day Los Angeles trip you will receive approx USD $135.00 for your entire stay that is approx AUD $180.00 deduct your expenses while up in Los Angeles.

On a 3 day Singapore trip depending on arrival time you will receive approx SGD $119.00-$210.00 if we take the max allowance for a 3 day trip being SGD $210.00 that is AUD $199.00 again you will need to deduct all your expenses while in the slip port.

Allowances vary greatly depending on aircraft fleet and your destination therefore be very careful trying to work these into your calculations when working out your cost of living etc. Some fortnights and months you may get great allowances and overtime others not so much.

I hope this basic information helps. At the end of the day it is a fantastic career working with the best airline in the world and the opportunities for future promotion are there but its important you go in knowing some basic facts. Once again good luck.

Hi GalleyHag,

Thank you so much for the useful information.

I'm just curious given the 42k annual base salary + allowances (food allowance and incidental pay) = approximately how much wound a starting cabin crew member earn per year? Do you reckon it can reach 70-80k?

Thank you so much.

Thank you so much for your kind words, I did get my offer! Finally happened for me, so hang in there everyone! As you know I've been waiting a while like so many others, so don't give up, and make sure to continue living your life in the meantime. Miracles do happen. Hasn't sunk in for me yet, I think I'm still in a bit of shock, I hope I can wake up tomorrow and feel excited about it!
How's your application coming along? thank you, looks like public transport it is

Short answer NO 70K would be at the very top end and to achieve that you would need to be on the A380 and even then im not sure its possible. If you are trying to establish how much you will have each fortnight the only consistent is your base salary. Depending on the fleet you are on and the routes you fly will depend on how much you earn. As you have zero control over that its best not to over commit beyond your base salary for fortnightly to fortnightly expenses eg rent, loan etc.

Having said that some fortnights and months you may make a lot in overtime and allowances and others not so much due to a lot of days off etc its really difficult to say.

If you look at say something like the mainline fleet 747/A330 and you have 2 months of regional flying (Asia) you will receive zero overtime and lets say AUD $150.00 per trip you will need to eat, drink and incidentals from your allowance exchange it back to AUD so you might depending on your expenses in the slip port and favourable exchange rates bring home AUD $80.00 from the trip based on a 3 day trip.

Im not 100% certain but normally when a training school is going through their is a shuttle bus from the Qantas campus to Alexandria so you would park at the campus they will cover all of that on day 1

I have 2 young boys so I really need to consider everything, but I want this so bad! I have asked a couple of times but don'tkbow i.e. If ground school is only located in Sydney?

Also someone asked earlier but I can't seem to find a reply, I applied via the workday portal which didn't ask for a photo & I didn't receive a confirmation email? Is this just the updated recruitment process?
From past experience the majority of ground schools are held in Sydney I think they fly you down and fly you back for your days off. I appreciate you have young children as a lot of cabin crew do so if you really want this as your career unfortunately its a bit of short term pain for the long term gain

Thank you, I though this was the case just wanted to double check

Does anyone know roughly what the training schedule is like? And in terms of accommodation do we just find something privately?

Hey thank you all, i will confirm which date I have as soon as my contract arrives and I've given notice just have to be careful until then. thank you for your kind words Training schedule comes one week before it starts, so I am anxiously waiting for it already as I may miss my best friend's wedding. Don't have my contract yet and they won't confirm which fleet until day one. Thank you for the parking tips, I did park at Bunnings for the AD but there were signs up warning non-customers against it. I love Bunnings anyway so I may just buy something every day if there isn't a shuttle from the QF parking lot(although I hope there is!)

My suitcase arrived yesterday (I was super keen and I bought one as a birthday gift to myself haha) and now that's my first tangible sign it's happening.

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting, never give up! I'll post more as I get more news or valuable tidbits thank you all for your valuable support.
