Global Express vs. Gulfstream 550
Hi everybody,
the owner I am currently flying, is looking into purchasing either a Global Express or G550.
I am looking for information on these type aircraft in terms of reliability, cost and maintenance support so I can compare both aircraft and provide comparisons to aid in the decision making.
Thank's a lot!!

First off, what a great problem!
Obviously, both are very capable aircraft. I think ultimately, it depends on what your principle wants to do and what is a priority. For example, if you intend on operating in and out of London City, the Global XRS is approved whereas the G550 is not. The estimated DOC's are a bit higher on the Global, but the cabin is wider and the windows are smaller. The XRS has two high-voltage electrical outlets in the galley whereas the G550 has one. We operate Gulfstreams and they have been very reliable. Since I'm in the States, I can't authoritatively speak to the day-to-day service support in Europe.
I don't know where you are in Europe, but if you are able to find and speak with Global and Gulfstream operators in the general vicinity of your home base, they'll be able to clue you in on "real-world" service expectations.
Some operators aren't very objective in their evaluation of an OEM, so take that into consideration with too dismal or effusive a critique. There is a lot of brand loyalty or perhaps operators who blindly want to validate a business decision they made themselves.

I apologize if I provided bad information regarding London City. I based it off London City's website that indicates the Global 5000, Global 6000, and XRS are approved with NetJets as the operator. London City Airport Jet Centre :: Search

Mission Profile is Key
Your Mission profile will be key. Where you intend to operate to/from and number of PAX traveling. Rating one aircraft above another without knowing detailed information about the average flight would not be fair. Also understanding the market and what is currently available at what these aircraft are realistically selling for. Your owner's budget will also play a role in determining which is the best fit.
I can develop a detailed report for you which will help make best decision.

Will your owner buy factory-new or second-hand?
You may get a good second-hand deal on both types.
Base your decision upon how many millions your chosen airplane is cheaper than Bluebook/Vref.
A lot of US-spec'd Gulfstreams have aft galleys, unpopular with European owners.
What airplane are you upgrading from?

Global Express and early build 5000s (ca. pre- 2010) have old generation CRT avionics and known as "Classics"..and the type rating for any newer G-5000 or G-6000, while the same, requires differences training. Also, these old boxes are loosing Honeywell support soon and will need to be replaced by aftermarket units. Best to look for Globals equipped with the newer Vision Cockpit suite.

There is an upgrade on the classic Global's with CRT's (DU870) to LCD (DU875) displays although it is expensive quotes run from $600-900K. u.s. depending on when the modification is done (stand alone or during a 60/120 month inspection) there has been quite a bit of push back from operators regarding Honeywells decision to not support them after 2018 so a solution may still appear. There is now a retrofit to put the LCD units in if a CRT fails although you will not get the functionality of CRT (charts on screen, better graphics etc.)
Let me know if you have any further questions on the Global, can't help with Gulfstream.
Cheers

Sorry to barge in on your thread. I have a question from a pilots point of view. Regarding supply and demand, job opportunities on the two types. Between the GV and Global express, which do you think offers more demand and opportunity for employment between the two?
I'm typed on the GV and often wondered if the Global was a more popular rating.

There always seems to be a shortage of GLEX pilots.

GLEX Pilots More in Need
In the current market if you are Global Express rated there is plenty of freelance work and paid well. On the Gulfstream front there is very little and pay is a lot lower. Gulfstream owners tend to have more permanent pilots while GLEX use more freelancers.
