Gulfstreamaviator: yah, Hilton Basel still charges a relative fortune for any internet access.. The alternative is to take your laptop across the street to the Starbuck's, by an insanely expensive coffee, and get 30' of free internet.... But beware, it's probably the earliest-closing Starbuck's of all creation, no joy last time after 9pm!!
Exec floor has free wifi, also free in exec lounge.
All other floors, etc, pay.
Slight aside: Fly MD, thanks re Basel, (close to home for you), tried leaning out of window to catch the signal, but never worked.
Marriott near Zurich Airport, was not free when I was last there, but picked up "free" wirless signal, good enough to check E Mails.
Thanks to all contributors: idea: can we put Hotel name in headline, to assist searchers serching.

Psssst! I think someone looking a lot like me and wearing my clothes suggested this in the first place. This has of course been studiously ignored by all and sundry and why I'm having to edit almost every post to show the details in bold. Except yours of course Gulfstreamaviator, and that bloke over there........ and the funny looking bloke at the back with the wart.
As for the rest of you................no thanks round here................nobody cares.........mumble mumble................dunno why I bother....................

Portugal
Loads of free Internet in airports, hotels, bars cafes and shopping malls all over Portugal. Mostly wi-fi but at OPO at least you'll need a cable.
Edit: After a weekend touring the bad news is that Portugal telecom must have realised the potential and employed some hotshot sales person. It seems that they have signed up many hotels and shopping centres as well as every post office. I can't speak for LIS or FAO airports but the free wired connection is still available airside only at OPO. They also offered paid wi-fi with a choice of 5 operators. I clicked on Portuguese Telecom and had a 90 minute freebie so give that a try first.
