I am trying to find some aerial photographs of the Fujairah coast region (now in the UAE) taken before1960. I am looking especially for photos of the Khor Kalba area. Maybe some of you who were posted there around that time may have some ideas. Thanks

The nearest 1960 photo I have was taken in Sohar, which is a bit farther south (in Oman). It's a pity I didn't keep the Canberra aerial photos of the Musandam Peninsular.

Apart from PR flights, maybe, there was no reason to fly over that part of the coast then.

The nearest I have got so far is a series of aerial photographs taken in 1968, but of the central part of Abu Dhabi emirate around Buraimi/Al Ain. Very interesting pictures they are too! On the one below you can see your old Buraimi (Da'udi) airfield very clearly.



The runway runs from top left (near where the Hilton Hotel is now), to bottom right, where the Intercontinental was later built.. You can even make out the white arrow threshold markers.

The threshold markers must be post 1962.

Interesting, brakedwell. Could well be. They were there in the 1968 aerial photo, and I post below a photo I took in 2006 of the last surviving one, just before the threshold of the NW facing runway (it must have been about 29). They were already tearing up the remains of the site for housing and by 2009 it had gone. The markers were white-washed rocks. They were quite big (about 15m long), as you can see from the photo, and were even visible on Google Earth.

Lovely pictures. The hard standing soon after the beginning was still there in 2006, but must now be the floor of someone's luxury villa.

We are getting away from the subject, but I note thast WV743 was sold to the USA as N72497 in1976, and it was languishing in Miami still with its RAF colours and maintenance serial 8112M (ex St Athan, I think). It then went to Oklahoma it seems. So the bump on the nose didn't hurt it too much.
