The Spitfire: Britain's Flying Past

Thursday 22nd September, 21.00 on BBC2.

Hosted by journalist and flying enthusiast John Sergeant, 'The Spitfire: Britain's Flying Past' celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Spitfire.

From the blurb:
One such Spitfire, MH434 was born at the legendary Castle Bromwich factory and during its valiant service, carried out over 79 sorties across Europe. John charts the lifespan of MH434 from her factory birth to her retirement and uses this nostalgia flight as a backdrop to sharing the extraordinary stories of ordinary people who feel they owe their lives to the Spitfire.

Looks interesting. I'll look out for it!
I have seen MH434 at Duxford a few times. Purely magical.

Agreed - that really annoys me too.

I am always explaining to my students that a plane is a tool used by carpenters.

John Sergeant was interviewed about the documentary earlier this week.
He used the word "plane".

If that offends, you might want to give the programme a miss.

And just think of the outcry if John Sergeant was to do the history of the bus (omnibus), car (autocar) or bike (bicycle) !

The Spitfire, BBC2 tonight

A most enjoyable programme, and the enthusiasm of all, including John, was quite exhilarating. Terrific people. Well done - and happy birthday Spitfire.

I agree with BOAC's comments. Very enjoyable, after swallowing a few lumps in the throat at times. Pity they couldn't have said a bit more on MH434's time with the Dutch, Belgians and how she fared post war. maybe John S is after a second sho to complete the story?
In any event, well done and thanks.

Apart from 'plane', I think he also referred to the Focke-Wulf 190 as a 'Fokker' !

Do little things like that matter. What is important is that future generations know what a Spitfire is and what it stands for. John Sargeant did a good job.

Spitfire!seen flying in OZ a few times, talks with blokes who flew them often, and always, was, is and forever will be, to me the finest Aeroplane that ever flew.
