Oddly enough not a heli.....but you have hit on it...a nav trainer.

Engines were indeed PW Wasps. Speed was also a factor.

I am not really sure on the design criteria, however its role was either to carry upto 12 passengers or 3 students plus instructor. Maybe the feeling was to keep the nav students well away from the flight deck?

No, just those 2 Wasps....which were the R2800 Double Wasp variant.

It was designed to replace another type then in service.

to replace the AT-13/14? Maybe not as it looks younger. To replace the C-47?

Not replacing the AT-13/14 or C-47.

C-47 is numerically close to the aircraft it was to replace!

OK, the C-45? And was it a USAF or a Navy replacement?

Hi Guys,

I've found references to the Beech T-36, to be built joinyly by Canadair as the CL-60, but the illustration I found has the horizontal tail mounted higher up the fin.

Just found a Wikipedia entry and it has it as the Beech XT-36A or CL-16 !

I guessed that my day of slogging backwards and forwards, exposing clues, would pay off... but not for me! I suppose correctly it is the XT-36 (or Canadair CL-60). RR

RR...yes, it was designed to replace the C-45.

but....

SincoTC...you have jumped in again...it is the Beech T-36A. I suspect there may have been variations on the drawing...mine was from a book on Beech aircraft.

The contract awarded to Beech was for 196 aircraft to replace the C-45. However it was cancelled at the last minute shortly before the first of 2 prototypes was due to fly. This appears to be the only picture of what is believed to be a prototype (as opposed to a mock up), and yes the cross member of the tail is much higher up.

Sorry RR...after all the work, Sinco has control...

Thanks skytrain,

I must admit that I was just about to delete my post, when I scrolled up and saw how much solo work RR had done, but you saw it first. I just came on line at coffee break and jumped off on the last couple of clues Sorry mate !!!

Open House please!
