TEEEJ, I would just like to say "Thank you" for the
fantastic photos of XH558. Brilliant shots.
Took me back to '62 - '64. Happy memories.
Even my Mum enjoyed them! She's 89 and used
to make bits for the Lancaster radio racks.
Thanks again for a really good job!!!!
From my RAF Form 543R. (Revised March 1955)
28-2-62. to 21-3-62. Attended Vulcan Mk1 Airframe Course. B1 Pass.
28-11-62. to 19-12-62. Attended Vulcan Mk2 Airframe Course. B1 Pass.
I'm still amazed any of us passed anything. Most of the time between
sleeping in the classroom, and going to bed in the early hours, was
spent in the NAAFI or the pubs in Lincoln!!!
I would like to thank the crew for flying VH 558 over chez moi at 1205, couple miles east of the A34 whilst car washing. Showed the wing form to perfection. I won't say you made an old man very happy, but you looked good. Thanks again, Al
Thanks Skeeler! Nikon D2X fitted with a Nikon Nikkor 300mm f/2.8. On and off with a 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverter. Some of them were taken with a Nikon Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8. Depends on the conditions, but speeds no higher than 1/1250th.
I had great fun yesterday running up and down the A15 trying to get inside the turning circle of XH588!
Thank you for the brilliant piccies, the very good close up of the claustraphobic type canopy show something that supprised me, the windscreen wipers and arms are near identical to certain wipers and arms that were fitted to the Avro Shackleton, in fact if I can find out from you chaps how to get in touch with the Vulcan people I have a box full of new ones in my garage that I will give to them.
VFRpilot, It's NOT a good looking aircraft, it's an Absolutely
Beautiful Aircraft! Always has been, Always will be!!!
Like the Lancaster, A true production from
MANCHESTER.
Athough I live in the SAARF now.
By 1963, Olympus Mk 301 engines of 20,000 lb (9,072 kg) thrust were being fitted (from aircraft XH557), but no engine retrofit for earlier B. Mk 2s was attempted.
TEEEJ, like so many have said - magnificent photo's - thanks for sharing...and when you've got some more don't be bashful they'll be greatly appreciated..
XH557 was the trials a/c used for the first fit of Olympus 301. First one 301, then two (port), then all four.
XJ784 was the next a/c followed by XL391.
XL384-390 were returned from service and modified to accept Olympus 301.
From the production line the remaining Vulcans, XM574-576, 594-595, 597-612, 645-657 were fitted with 301s.
I also loved the shot of 558 on the runway.
There was a distant shot of her at Farnborough on
the Beeb News this morning, but chubby little Dermot
didn't make any mention of her at all. Pity.
