One for the Frightning fans
This link
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/f...e_streaked.htm
(sorry, cant't get the slick way of directing to a link to work)
takes you to a lovely 1960s RAF recruitment film, complete with jaunty music.
Features 74 Sqdn aircraft.
The text on the National Archive site claims that the Lightning once held the World air speed record. Not to my (limited) knowledge.
Anyway, it's a great bit of film!

I particulary enjoyed it because this is a project I am working on at present:
oil on canvas
...and I would be very interested in making contact with anybody that has flown the real thing and is able to give technical advice that has some integrity.

Chaps!
Have a look also at the 1945 -1951 era public information films on the same National Archive site!
see http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/f...filmindex2.htm
Some quite large files, but look well worth the effort.

Mrs.G is doing a fine art degree at the moment, all they seem to want her to do is paint abstract views of people and flowers. Clearly, she booked on the wrong course!

Posting a link:
Also achievable by typing 'lightning film' or whatever, highlighting text, and clicking on the 'insert link' icon. Best to check it as MJ says via 'preview' as sometimes too many http's get into the basket

Not so fast Tiger Mate
I think we might have some serious copyright issues here. I suggest you desist immediately. In any event, you'll be hearing from my lawyers about this:

Very sad sight travelling north to Sunderland for the replay against Fulham. About 2 or 3 miles north of Grantham services, east of the A1 in a scrapyard is a Lightning 3 or 6 on a sort of plinth, looking very sad painted in gaudy colours and appearing vandalised.
Disgusting end for a fine Chariot.

That is an ex-RAF Gutersloh green machine F2a I think, that has been vandalised for many years. It used to be an attraction within a hauliers yard, and the owner would not sell it to any aviation enthusiast. Sadly these days it needs putting out of its misery

We had three delivered to our airfield for scrapping (sob), would it have been from 92 at Wildenrath? - long time ago.
What I do remember is one of them bit back. When the destroyer cut into the wing with his cutting disc, there must still have been some vapour in the tanks, because there was a large explosion and ball of flame. Thankfully no-one was killed, but it makes you wonder if they even bothered to de-lethalise the airframe.
