punished for "endangering transport"

a judge in nz has last month, sentenced a d1ckhead who shone a pointy green thing at a landing airnz 737 to 4 months detention, with a curfew and 150 hrs community service.

threatened with 18 months jail if he's naughty again.

article here

good stuff.

Four months 'community sentence' doesn't sound too tough to me. From the article it appears to be home detention. Any Kiwis care to clarify this?
Looks more like the p*ss weak type of sentence we would expect to see in Australia. Personally I'd prefer to see idiots like this receive a custodial sentence for what is endangering life on a potentially large scale (ie aircraft crashes in a residential area, killing all on board and some on the ground)

Sadly, I agree Sand Dune, it's hard enough to catch these massive F$#@wits so when they are, they should be punished and severely so. I've been lasered in Singapore quite badly on a 3 mile final, Beijing multiple times on one approach, but of course it was actually clear, the pollution takes care of it quite well and into Karachi, so it's a widespread problem and it quite a serious one at that.

New Zealand Community Detention is defined here: Corrections Department NZ - Community detention

It is a good start. Certainly a greater deterrent than handed out by Australian Courts.

These village idiots need to be paraded in the town square before being put on public display at the airport where the laser attack occurred.

They caught some idiot in England recently, decided to point his green laser at a police helicopter! The equipment on board pinpointed not just the house but the individual having a beer in his back garden! A few minutes later the car patrol was knocking on his door and arresting him!

Possibly a couple of years ago now but two idiots in the UK got six months each custodial for pointing a laser at an aircraft. Think it was PPRuNe's own lawyer/judge who sent them down too!

We had our chance a few years back when I was hit one evening. The culprit was caught, but very little ended up happening...page 2 shows the outcome.
