Sunfish, Romulus, I think I can nail the attractiveness of overseas maintenance with a couple of examples. It is not wages. It is the ability of the facility to turn a blind eye and declare that an aircraft is fit to fly in the cheapest possible manner. This is the Singapore way.

We have a report of a QF plane that was up there. The Qantas LAME came in at 0700. The Singapore LAME who had worked the 8 hour night shift handed in cards he had certified for covering inspections with an estimated time totalling 58 hours. Of course he found nothing wrong.

And then there is the broken wires they just used a household stapler to repair in dozens of locations across 3 different aircraft.

When managers only look at the price it is really hard to compete with dodgy operators that cheat the system. Of course the latent defects that are missed come back and bite the airline and sometimes their passengers at the most inconvenient of times.

Did any unions approach Virgin and ask them to keep the work onshore, or help address the issues that could have avoided the work going offshore?

Jobs are being lost in Aviation industry,unions should be together to stem these losses,our future are with these airlines to do jobs here otherwise all will be offshore and members are getting pissed of nothing is being done,Forstaff eba is due and let's see what Steve is going to do,the current proposal idea is absurd and will drive Qantas to shut sooner.

AWU and ALAEA should start working together and prevent jobs losses stop cutting each other throat

Aircraft going overseas has nothing to do with the overseas MRO turning a blind eye. Its just a cheap shot to support what has become an inefficient sector. There is no doubt that there is good engineering here. Just as there is good engineering there.

Its got to do with whether you can get the work done within any reasonable timeframe and certainty in Australia. Work practices and/or staffing levels do not allow this. The opportunity cost of not having an aircraft in operation because it has become a hangar queen in Australia added to the far higher cost of labour just doesn't add up. JHAS just doesn't have the manpower to do the thousands of manhours required in any reasonable timeframe to get the aircraft back in the air. It is also a case that if parts are required you can almost certainly get them straight away in places like Singapore rather than being at the end of the line in Australia. Not a killer issue but the ability to get the manhours into the airframe is.

Virgin take their aircraft to NZ. Tiger, Jetstar, Skywest and Skytraders all take theirs to Asia now as well as do minor checks and maintenance here themselves. All previous customers of JHAS. It is still more cost effective despite the costs involved in moving the aircraft to those MRO's.

Hold on a minute. How can Virgin offshore an entire fleet to Portugal??!! Without any union making a meal of it in the press??
Did any union do anything at all with Virgin to try to keep this onshore?

Announced this arvo, Jetstar is not renewing it's A320 overnight work contract with JHAS. Current contract ends Dec 31.

Looks like the phrase of JHAS=Just Hangar And Storage is starting to make sense....

Before the end of the year Air NZ will be leaving QF Line Maintenance and signing on with JHAS in Perth. Daily AKL-PER 777's switching to 787's mid next year, along with the twice weekly 767 CHC-PER seasonal services.

Their Line work seems to be pretty healthy.

The ALAEA are not in a position to do anything. They created the problem over many years and the outcome should not come as a shock to anyone.
The unions have destroyed work opportunities for our children and grand children.

It always has. Some guys that worked there used to rave about the original line manager that set it all up and got all the contracts going.
Haven't heard many managers referred to as top blokes.

I've heard a story that Tiger wanted to use the Hangar recently and were told to go elsewhere...I guess the same will happen to Jetstar after Chrissy ???..Also that there was a "buyer" in the wind for Both of the hangars ?? I believe they operate A320's and B767's !!
