SPATIAL AWARENESS TESTS
 

Hi Everyone,

I have my stage 1 assessment in January and I've been going through the practice papers online. I am struggling lots with the spatial awareness tests in so far as the cube maps are concerned! Does anyone else find these difficult? I've tried searching online for some help and practice, but they do not specifically cater to cube nets and maps.

Any advice or help as to the content and difficulty of the actual tests in stage 1 would be greatly appreciated!

I have my Stage 1 at the start of February and I too have been looking at these. They are fairly difficult to try and visualise and I'm not sure there is any easy way to do it, just lots of practice.

You just need to try and work out a way of doing the puzzles that works for you and keep practising that technique until you get quicker and more confident at completing them!

Not trying to sound big headed, but I did my cube tests with the CAA as it was then in the early 80's, I did not practice or prepare beforehand as I am atrue believer in either you've got it or haven't. This is no disrespect to applicants who are highly intelligent but the job does require a certain aptitude sorry I mean a special aptitude. No matter how many times you try the cube it cannot be practiced, in my opinion. If there is any advice I can give then it would be do not rush, just make sure each one is correct by double checking. I got to finish 35 out of 40 and passed. I was with one guy on the assessments who on the personality tests advised me to answer extreme in either way, I didn't and answered truthfully, he did it his way and failed. My last word if you want to take advice is do not try to cheat the system be your natural self and I go back to my earlier words you've either got it or not, if you haven't and you get through its a tough ride. I concur with what ILS 119.5 said. I'm only a trainee so can only advise my point of view from the application side of things; but I've also done these tests (successfully) for Police and Air Force and the same theory applies.

congratulations on "doing these tests (successfully) for Police and Air Force".

Obviously, "these tests" are not specific to the skills required in ATC then, which are, (I suspect), very different to those required by officers in the Police and Air Force.
Was ATC your 'third choice' of career, perchance?

Personally, I think the best preparation is practicing all types of spatial puzzles and not just cubes. If you search the net you'll find all kinds of free games and puzzles (I can post some links once I dig them up out of my inbox, if you like). I've found that practicing all kinds of mental manipulation really conditioned my mind...eventually you might find the cubes easier than the rest you're practicing on!

Trying to practice it might help you get through the selection test. But what's the point? You'll be shown wanting if you haven't got it as soon as you get into the sim or, worst case, OJT. If you don't have it you won't make it; sorry to be blunt but you'd just be wasting everybody's time.

I'd echo Lon here. Don't try to 'practice' your way through an aptitude test. The elements of your make up that are tested in these are exams are not easily train-able and if you struggle with these kind of tests - perhaps air traffic just isn't for you.
