clearance: vector or route

Hi,

Whilst flying somewhere over the not so sunny UK, I was under vectors. Soon after receiving a heading I was told "cleared to route VOR and WAYPOINT".

I understood this as clearance to route straight to the VOR and then the waypoint as filed. That's what I did.

Then around 2 minutes later I was told "own navigation to VOR".

No challenge by ATC and the direction was a difference of around 20 degrees, but curious as to others opinions as whether I was correct or not.

Thanks for any views =)
