OR Tambo ATC

Controllers at OR Tambo have this annoying ‘clearance’ that I haven’t heard anywhere else in the world. On handover from ground to tower in response to the pilot calling “ready” the tower controller instructs the pilot to “listen out for departure”. Should the pilot fail to read back this ridiculous ‘clearance’ the irate controller often insists on a read back. Surely listening out is always a given. Wouldn’t a more appropriate response simply be to simply greet or just to read back the call sign as they do the world over?

You are supposed to say:

"Roger tower, this is Airline123 listening out on the assigned frequency. We usually do not do this, but today is a new day and we are open to doing new things."

Along similar lines when you arrive on a new frequency:

*Continue as cleared

*Maintain a level when reaching (without having been cleared to a new level)

Both of those are.....well, duh!?

Let's not forget those great additions to RT:

"Fully ready"

"Ready at the holding point"

and a recent favourite of mine in response to a clearance for take-off,
"Gotcha, thanks, cheers!"

"Line up rwy xx and wait"

"We still need about 30 secs" - while still at a distance from the runway that can be hardly covered in these 30 secs.

I use "continue as cleared" on a regular basis. I usually say it if I've just had a "brain fart" and can't remember what I ACTUALLY want to say....

UNHOOKED

AND YOUR PROBLEM IS...????

Would you rather hear ATC say "Wait at the holding point"
(Sounds so rude)??

It doesn't reqire any sort of readback, cause no clearance has been issued, unless the controller said to you 'cleared to listen out for departure' but i've never heard that one or seen it in a book.
I would have thought just an acknowledgment of your call would suffice.Keep things simple. But you never know what they are being taught down there now.Seen as all the experience has left.
