Interview Hints PLS

Hey guys any tips for my phone interview THIS week? Then last interview/day that follows? (I found info on the day on here but not much on phone interview).

Any and all will be of help. I am looking at a career change- currently maths teacher. Friends of friends in the industry had been trying to get me into it for a while, went out to Airservices (Sydney) very briefly, got an idea but a very basic one! Definately like the sound and look of it (right up my alley) but don't really know much about it.

Read through a bunch of threads and am worried my lack of aircraft knowledge, codes and knowing which stream I'd prefer (en route or tower) will go against me.

What should I know and read up on today or tomorrow?
THX!

PS What's the best stream for a possible Sydney position and limited if any overnight work? Thanks again!!!

not sure what that meant Knackers

Incase you're asking for clarification:
I was told by friend of friend at air services sydney that you chose your shifts, ie he does mornings, another does just afternoons, ie no overnight shifts.

Another person said you do one overnight shift a month. Another friend who has a friend in airservices says its first in best dressed each month, so prob a few overnighters in there each month. I'm not good with overnighters, therefore looking to avoid them where possible.

Any phone interview info or advice. Thx

Recieved my Letter of Offer for the En-route course starting in MEL on the 13th April 2015. Looking forward to getting stuck into it come April next year.

Thanks to everyone on here for all their insight and patience with us applicants, it is much appreciated.

Cheers

Roster

The friends of friends have no idea. These days the published roster is issued and you then have the ability to swap shifts if you can find someone to do it with and it meets rostering and fatigue guidelines. Unallocated shifts (not enough staff to carry the roster) are up for grabs to swap with, again subject to the rules. Straight from the college to Sydney Tower has happened but the trainee needs to have demonstrated ability in the simulator, generally above his course mates. This ability will need to be confirmed, probably, by a Sydney Tower checker. On arriving in Sydney Tower it will be at least 2 years til you could expect full ratings and then night shifts. If you really don't like night shifts then I have to say maybe this isn't for you cause they are a fact of life for most ATC. Maybe you should be looking at a regional or Metro D Tower that is non continuous ( no nights).

Whizz Wheel / Flight Computer

Just did my telephone interview. Can't wait to hear if I get through to the assessment day. Hoping for Melbourne Enroute.
Does anyone know if Airservices will allow a watch with a whizz wheel into the assessment day?

Paperplanepilot,

I wore my citizen skyhawk watch into the assessment day, this particular watch has a whizz wheel on the outer bezel. They didn't check, or seem to care really. But to be honest it is not required, and they may get suspicious if you are playing with your watch during the testing.

As I said though you don't really need a whizz wheel for the assessment day questions.

All the best.

ARN application

To all those who have just recently been offered an air traffic position, how long did it take CASA to give you an ARN. I emailed my application off on Monday (27th November) and they sent back an automatically generated email saying "blah blah blah, we are experiencing delays in processing correspondence due to blah blah blah."

Can't really sort out the medical stuff until I have an ARN so was curious about expected timeframe.

Thanks in Advance.

ARN

Mine only took a few days from memory. I rang them and asked for it over the phone after about three days and they gave it to me, and then the letter arrived a few days after that.

You can start your medicals without it though, especially your dame appointment as they will do a few checks and refer you to a number of other places for further testing. You don't really need to have your ARN at that first appointment as they don't send anything back to CASA until all of your other tests are finished anyway (well that's what they told me).

Yeah, that's the same sort of story I got, except for the eye test. She was adamant that the process would be much easier if I had an ARN before doing that test. I'll give them a ring Wednesday and see what they have to say for themselves.

Thanks.

Kiwi,

There are remote TCU's (separate buildings to the towers) at Perth, Adelaide, Cairns and Sydney.
Melbourne and Canberra TCU's are in Melbourne Centre.
Brisbane TCU is in Brisbane Centre.

Facilities | Airservices

This may change in the not so distant future (TCU consolidation)

Well was looking for a career change ( pilot to ATC ) but failed the online assessment!

I have military service where I passed aircrew aptitude testing but I don't seem to have what it takes to do ATC. I'm a bit confused. I don't think I did that badly or is the pass mark rather high?

Hey pilotchute..good to see you on here..did you try a few of the online practice tests from SHL? The pointy end is a bit lean at the moment.

It depends on the test, some have a really high pass mark..I didn't find out from ASA but I got told my results from Airways NZ.
