Can anyone please shed some light on internet access at the school.

Can you plug in your own lap top and sort out a service provider or can you only use the school equipment with limited access?

Yes, all the mod cons here, with plenty of terminals provided for student use.

If you have a laptop, there are a couple of ethernet access points in the ¿social building? by the bar which can be used to surf the net, and the nice people in IT will allow you to log on to the network and access the student printer. No ethernet access from the rooms, though.

The school does not enjoy the fastest web connection and there are lots of staff/student users by day, which slows things down a bit sometimes. The school is evidently keeping the issue of improved bandwidth under review. I think they have ISDN, and ADSL hasn´t got out to the airport yet. The phone system has digital network answerphone etc but does not seem to support dial up from rooms.

There is a limitation in that they don´t support POP3 email, so you´need to use a webmail service (fasthosts and others provide these, if you´re fed up with hotmail or have your own domain). It means you can´t just replicate and compose emails in your room...but then again, time spent in your room is strictly for sleeping, showering and groundschool !

Hope this helps

George
