A return to the old Wannabee format?

Hello all,

Writing this as I find that the new wannabees format simply does not appeal to me as much as the former arrangement.

What should concern the mods is the decreased level of involvement from people interested in all four aspects (which the mods have decided to run seperately).

There used to be a lot of action on the one wannabees channel. Now any one of its constituents is almost defunct of any real change for quite long stretches.

Personally I can feel it is interesting me less and I am noticing a distinct fall-back in the levels of other, more experienced pilots, contributing to help, simply because of the fact that the forum subdivision has become too specific.

I really think that the wannabees could do better if the powers that be, have a look at this and maybe try going back to the old way....

I don't mind it now. I have no interest whatsoever in US flying so I am glad I don't have to see it.
You note that the more experienced pilots aren't answering the questions. Well, I hate to say it but some of us are quite sick of repeating ourselves. A little bit of effort on the poster's behalf could have found the answer themselves. The search function still works or better yet, ask the organisation directly. This is particularly true for CAA type of questions.

Its all work in progress. I think we might look at lumping Sponsorship & Jobs with Pro training UK. It doesn't have to be particularly logical - just as long as it makes for a lively forum.

Things here often go a bit quiet as we enter the height of summer. There are many factos some of which are:

Not much happens recruitment wise in the middle of summer
Everybody is out in the sunshine not browsing the web
All professional pilots are working flat out

I agree with J-Heller. Much quieter in here since the split.

Fair point about people repeating themselves... but things change. Last week someone asked a question which had been asked a million times before. Keygrip (I think it was Keygrip anyway) gave an answer which was different to that which had been given before. Turns out the rules have changed. For those of us who don't have time to read every official web-site, if the questions don't keep getting asked then changes might slip by un-noticed.

Of course it's all personal opinion, and at the end of the day the only opinions which count are those of the moderators.

You can have the greatest Bulletin Board software and the most **** hot moderators, but if you ignore the views and needs of the audience it will fall apart very quickly. Its the contributors that make a bulletin board work.

Many posters in this section are likely to be new and not know about the search or how to use it properly. I still struggle with it myself :(

Some questions can be very repetitive but patience is a virtue. I know that when I first signed up I asked what now seem obvious questions. At the time though they were important to me as I am sure they are to other new posters, and I was very very grateful for the answers I received.

If everyone did a search for the answers (most topics have been covered in depth) rather than post a question, that would be the end of pprune as we know it :{

Readers have reduced by almost half sivce the split into multiple forums so I've decded to merge all the training forums (Pro UK etc and Pro US and Groundschool) into one and leave the actual job/interview/sponsorship forum as a separate one.

I know it was frustrating to see the same old questions asked over and over but it was what kept the forum alive. Whilst I know some of our regular 'repliers' were getting fed up at least they are still here and there is always someone to point out the error of someones ways if they are too 'repetitive'.

Variety is the spice of life and the hurley burly of numerous threads in this forum will keep it interesting and hopefully draw some of the readership back. Please remember that the mods do their work on here on a voulntary basis in their spare time and having a go at them for not keeping everything as tidy as some of us would like to see this place is just not on. Their main function is just to keep an eye on things in general and protect my back if someone is too dim to realise the problems of breaking sensitive libel and slander laws.

By reducing this back to one single forum for all flight and ground training for the professional licence I hope that more experienced line pilots who have been sown the same route will visit and provide the kind of response a lot of you are looking for.

Sorry I haven't been around to get involved in this (or any!) discussion recently - both home affairs and professional workload have had to take priority over enjoying myself on the 'puter!

Danny obviously agreed with those who felt the new forum style lacked focus and appeal, and so we now have a new, new Wannabes. The forum is only as good as the contributions you make to it (not that I can claim any moral high ground there!), so let's hope that the revised format revitalises the discussions. As WWW said, though, the forum does go a bit quiet in the summer as many wannabes are too busy flying and studying to spend time here, so give the new format a bit of time before you call for further change!

Even if I'm notable only by my absence, I shall be watching with interest - when I can!

I think this BB is probably the best thing that as ever happened when it comes to sharing information and helping others in aviation. Yes, you do get repeat questions but this is not necessarily a complete waste of resources because:

(1) The mix of answers given each time may have a different "slant" to them which is useful if you are researching a topic and want as much input as possible. I think a good example of this is the currently running thread in Private Flying about differences between IR & IMC rating. The question sounded like it could easily have been answered by several methods yet has turned into a very detailed discussion involving many technicalities,

(2) Given that some areas are constantly changing, updates are useful. ie Licensing requirements, good places to visit,

I try to use the search function as much as possible before asking a question but don't always manage to get what I'm looking for. It is obvious (and a bit irritating) that some members don't bother. I must admit when I first joined PPRuNe I found the tendency was to ask a question before trying to get the answer some other way. I put that down to the environment (and me!) Perhaps when a new member registers, the appropriate use of search could be emphasised along with a tactful note pointing out how much work actually goes into many of the replies.

As an aside how about having an area of the PPRuNe site set up where members can get commonly requested information such as topics like "how to get an ATPL," the contact details of various aviation related organisations, etc, etc. I guess peoples' time is an issue - maybe some of the rest of us could help out a bit.
