Word on the street is that it was the replica Spirit of St Louis, no more known but aparantly a pretty bad one; unfortunately quite possibly fatal.

No more known at this time

i was there this afternoon, it WAS the replica of the Spirit of St.Louis.It had just taken off when at about 300 feet it very obviously suffered a catastrophic structural failure , the wings were seen to fold and the wreckage fell into a field just beyond the threshold of runway 05.
An air ambulance which had been parked at Coventry Airport took off and landed at the crash site. Some 15 minutes later it took off again and the Air Show Commentator announced that the pilot was being taken to hospital, which seems to indicate that incredibly he survived the crash- I sincerely hope so, it was very upsetting to behold,

Last I heard he was seriously injured. Fingers crossed and prayers on the way - it certainly did not look survivable I'm afraid. Particularly gutting as the guys at the aircraft were kind enough to hold the door open so I could get some photos of the interior earlier in the day.

It was the swedish air show pilot Pierre Hollander. He was also a Captain on SAAB 340 with Skyways here in Sweden.
Very sad...:(

How absolutely awful. Luckily the kids missed seeing this horrific event. We left shortly before.

As a display pilot at the show - it was gutting.

The Foxtrot Formation extend their deepest sympathies to the pilot's family & friends.

For those that aren't already saddened and shocked by this accident, The Times has a picture on page 8 taken moments before impact. This type of accident must be a pilot's worse nightmare. My deepest sympathies to the pilot's family & friends.

No doubt some lovely person has made a few quid from that photo then  The only people who get to see my shots are the AAIB.
