Howdy folks,

I had a FAA ppl issued on the back of my JAA ppl in 2000.

Now I’ve got a JAA CPL/IR

I’m going to the states for some flying in Aug (among other things ;) )

The question is, can I get my FAA licence re-validated using my JAA CPL of do I start from scratch.

I’m assuming I have to start from scratch and send it all off to the FAA :(

Anyone done this recently? What’s the lead time?

TIA for the help

The answer is 'neither'. Your FAA Private privileges transfer automatically to your CPL. If you read the back of the FAA certificate it says something like "valid only when accompanied by license number 12345A", it makes no mention of the grade of the license (PPL, CPL or ATPL).

Since the UK CAA use your CAA reference number to identify all of your licences and ratings, your JAA CPL has the same number as as your CAA PPL and therefore validates the FAA Private that you already hold. N'est pas?

Thanks BB,

I N'est pas, so I guess I’ll just turn up and get a BFR – that’s common sense (I'll check visa reqs though).

It’s a shame the CAA don’t work that way, if it was them I’m sure they’d have their eight pounds of flesh!
