Hello
How long has MAN had a JFK route? Was JFK operated by BOAC in the 1960s/70s using VC-10s or 707s? And also what was the equipment used on this route in 1980s before the 767-300s where used-was a Tristar used? as I remember BA Tristars at MAN. Also what US airlines operated into MAN in the 60s, 70s and 80s? Did Pan Am ever operate schedules from MAN, or TWA? and also when did MAN first get its ORD route?

Services to the US from MAN have been going at least since the early 1960's, when MAN was used as a staging post by Sabena in particular for their route to IDW/JFK, using Constellations (IIRC) and then later 707's. BOAC then started 707 services in competition. I think KLM and may also have run something similar. By 1970 BOAC had the route to itself. The 707 was succeeded by VC-10 services (not sure what was running by the early '80's though).

I don't think Pan Am (or any other US carrier) served MAN prior to AA staring the first link to ORD in the early '80's (1983?), except for when fog at LHR led to diversions (often in very large numbers - I've seen a photo from the '70's featuring a row of Pan Am, TWA, Air India and BOAC 747's lined up along the apron!)

This information has been culled entirely from various books chronicling the history of the airport (I was barely born when BOAC became BA!).

Sabena started their New York service 50 years ago (anniversary is 28th October) using Dc6s, they also used Dc7s upped frequency and used 707s from 1960 to March 1964 when they were obliged to reduce frequency at the behest of BOAC.

LH operated Connies to Chicago and Montreal in 1956 (lasted just that year i believe).

BOAC's servicies to North America ran at 3 daily (New York, Toronto and Chicago/Montreal). Some routed via Prestwick and I think the New York ones were extended to different Caribbean destinations for a year or two.

Last New York service by BA in the "olden" era was in 1983 when VC10s were doing this and a Toronto service (YYZ withdrawn 1980or 1981). JFK reintroduced in 1985, (4 weekly L1011s). Became daily 747s/Dc10s orginating Gatwick around 1988 with 767s coming on the route 1993ish. Service to Los Angeles lasted April 1993 to October 1994 on a 5 weekly basis.

AAL: Chicago began 1st May 1986, operated 2 daily in summers from 1989 to 1990 (period of operation varied). A JFK link started 1991 until 1993 whwen it was reduced to a summer-only 757 service in 1994 and permanently withdrawn. The operated a Dallas route summer 1997 and 1998.

Continental started 1994ish with 757s to Newark.

Delta began Atlanta services in 1991 and a JFK service ran in late 1990s (1998?) to 2000.

Northwest had a 2 weekly cargo service using 747s from 1979 to 1980 originating in Minneapolis (flight number NW 923).

TWA & Pan Am have operated through MAN but not as scheduled services (as well as on diversion) - I remember seeing 2 707s of PA on one day in 1979.

PIA been operating 5th freedom services to JFK since 2001, Olympic gained rights to Boston at the same time but didn't start them.

BA also operated a LGW-MAN-Orlando service once or twice a week, in the late eighties I think.

I'm pretty sure that the MAN-JFK and MAN-YYZ flights were being operated by VC10s by 1977.

TWA 707s were weekly summer charter visitors in the late 70s. Pan Am 707s were also about but not as often.
