Ive managed to acquire some really useful contacts at some of the UK's major airlines. One of which is Virgin Atlantic. Anyway, I have managed to finmd one of their Captains who has a brother with a flying school in LA.. .Does anyone know what the flying is like in LA or the US as a whole.. .Im looking at going out later on this year as the cost of travelling is cheap and accomodation is reduced with my contacts.. .Would it be worth taking someone with me??

My opinion would be the best place on LGB is Rainbow Air. Sure, take a friend and try it out. You will not regret it.

I did my PPL and night rating in LGB about 18 months ago. Found the area very nice to fly in. Loads of airfields about, also nice trip out to Catalina. I met a few people who were at Rainbow, all recommended it. Also spoke to a previous employee who gave me a lot of info. Hope you enjoy it.. .. .NLM13

LA is a great place to fly in the US but dont just confine yourself to the LA Basin...get yourself some real experience and head out to the desert. I've done two long trips from Brackett Field and they were great. One was SE over to New Mexico and up to Page in Utah etc and the other was ME coast to coast. There is some amazing flying to be had so make the most of it!!. .Grand Canyon and Lake Powell is the most beautiful scenery I've seen!!

You could also check out UKFT (who are/were affliated with Rainbow), their aircraft are old but well maintained. A good local training area over the coast, plenty of ATC work, superb x/c flying, lots of pro pilots to chat with and a large number of european pilots doing just what you're doing, make LGB one very good option to consider.. .HD

make sure you visit The nearest airport to LGB in your travels, Santa Ana (SNA), possibly the busiest General aviation airport anywhere with a very unique an challenging mix of traffic operating on parallel runways, High volume major airline jet traffic and high volume GA in the same place at the same time.
