Hi,. . I've been enquiring about ATPL's and a few web sites have suggested that it may be possible to claim tax back for part/all of the course. Does anyone know if this still stands, and who / how does one qualify for this rebate?. .. .Appriciation in advance for any replies! . .. .

G-HIGH. .. .Vocational Tax Relief (VTR), based on a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) "Piloting Transpost Aircraft", was withdrawn 3 years ago. Unfortunately, I do NOT expect the Chancellor to bring in anything similar in the upcoming budget.. .. .The Treasury seems to have the idea that anything to do with aircraft must just be about "rich boys' toys" & therefore it sees no reason to give any relief from Income Tax or VAT.. .. .GAMTA has set up a sub-committee that has been working very hard on this for some time, & which is probably the best chance of bringing about a change.. . . . [ 22 March 2002, 14:20: Message edited by: Distaff Beancounter ]

Can someone elaborate on maybe the possibility of establishing yourself as a Company, registering for a VAT Registration Number therefore being able to claim back the 17.5% on any training OR equipment purchased.. .. .Maybe I'm wrong but I believe I seen this before?. .. .Regards,. .B1.

Thanks for the info.. .. .As for regestering yourself as a company, and trying to reclaim the VAT back on your training, the only way you can do that is if the VAT man believes that your pilot training is necessary for the type of work that you do etc etc.. . .. .G - HIGH

You can easily form a limited company. However BEFORE it can get a VAT registration, you will have to convince the VAT registration office, that the company intends to trade, in a relevant trade or profession. For instance, you would have to show that your company going to hire you out as a sub-contractor fATPL pilot, to an airline, or something similar.. .. .PS ...and before you ask, the rules are different, of course, as to what expenses the Inland Revenue will allow against Income Tax or Corporation Tax, compared to those allowed by HM Customs & Excise for VAT.
