Firstly i know the title specified posting this on the Private Flying Forum but Big Red L(Pivate Flying forum administrator) recommended posing an enquiry on this area.. .. .Im 21 at uni doing a non aviation degree but flying has always been my ambition. I am curently considering doing my PPL in south africa in the summer as a starting point, with the possibility of continuing with a commercial licence after i graduate.. .. .I have a rough idea of the cost involved but i need advice on which particular flight school to do my ppl at. Does anybody have any particular recommendations as to which one i select? Are there any i should particualary avoid that anybody is aware of, and is it worth paying slightly more for a better quality of training and better facilities?. .. .Any advice would be much appreciated

Be very very careful about South Africa. I loved it and had a great time. The PPL is easy to convert to UK, so now worries there.. .BUT if you want to go further, than I'm sorry JAA will ask you to stick the licence where it hurts! And trust me the cost of the conversion for ATPL or even CPL eventually works out to be the same if you had done it here anyway.. .. .There is NO SCHOOL in south Afriac JAA approved!!.. .Check out the caa webiste for recognised schools to be sure.. .If you going for a laugh and some great flying for just a PPL then you've certainly picked right.. .You want to go further, then I suggest you come back and get serious.. .As for schools, I'm biased, FTC was great, fantastic instructors but Management lie and promise the world and their people skills leave a lot to be desired.. .Good luck, oh and dont pay pounds up front, go there as a local, pay rand, dont say your from England, pretend you're on holiday with your family or something.. . <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="cool.gif" /> . .Good luck

Hi,. .If you just want a PPL then you can fly day VFR on any ICAO PPL in Britain providing the aircraft is registered in the UK and you don't fly out of the UK.. . To convert the ICAO PPL to a JAR PPL requires all the ground exams, any flying training as required by the FTO doing your conversion and radio license and Skill test unless you have 100 hours P1 in which case you must do the JAR air law exam, the radio license and a skill test only. For confirmation check out the CAA website.. .. .There are plenty of schools in SA and US that will do you a cheap PPL and if you want to go further than just a basic PPL look at Progress Flight Academy's Modular One course. They were one of a few schools that got only positive feedback from a search on this site.. .43 Air Academy in SA have also got a good rep'. .. .Try a search under FTC, Progress and 43 Air Academy to see for yourself.. .. .I'll be putting a post up in July when I get back from Progress after the Modular One course.(That's if my "%@&ing study visa ever arrives!). .Email me if you want the research I've done but do check the search here and on the CAA website..... .. .Regards Rodders <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" />. . . . <small>[ 20 March 2002, 23:07: Message edited by: Rodders ]</small>

Daydreamer,. .. .Check out the Good Hope Flying Club in Cape Town (www.ghfc.org.za) - the rates are pretty unbelievable at the moment due to very low Rand - £29 for an hour for a Warrior! Contact name there is Pieter Wesselman (e-mail: [email protected]). . .. .It is situated in Cape Town international so you get to train surrounded by some real heavy metal. It's a great club full of enthusiastic + friendly instructors and members. . .. .Weather in Cape Town can be pretty awful in the winter there though - often very wet. Up country in Gauteng area I heard winters are dry while summers wet.

Rodders. .Officially you need a study visa for flight training in South Africa.. .. .However if you are only going for a PPL then it is not worth the hassle and money.. .I did my entire training there (Comm) without one - provided you leave the country every 3 months you can keep coming in as a tourist. Whilst you are there you just happen to decide you want to do a bit of flying <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="biggrin.gif" /> . .. .Anyway good luck. .Regards. .Cloggie

Actually, FTC of Africa is approved for JAA PPL's, CPL's and Instructor Ratings, so whoever said there are no JAA-approved schools in SA is incorrect - perhaps the CAA website is just out of date. Sorry, no IR's though.. .. .Also, I believe there is one other school in SA that is also JAA approved, think they are based in George,. .. .TB
