Four killed in Tassie plane crash
March 14, 2003
FOUR people died tonight when a light plane crashed on an island in Bass Strait.
Civil Aviation Safety Authority spokesman Peter Gibson said the four-seater Cessna 172 crashed on Trefoil Island off north-west Tasmania just after 6pm (AEDT), killing all aboard.
"Witnesses saw the plane in a steep dive before it crashed," Mr Gibson said.
"It is not known whether the plane was taking off or landing."
Mr Gibson said police were at the scene and investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau would visit the island tomorrow.

Sadly it appears too true. A/C apparently is RPI, C172. Local operator, (YSMI) and although I only knew him in passing, a lovely guy. Getting close to home I guess.................

That is a pretty damning report, and should be distributed to every flight school for student pilots to read and in every charter operator's crew room for the same reason.
You might get away with it sometimes, but not all the time.
