Choosing a school for CPL and IR

If i've passed my last 6 exams....fingers crossed...ill be looking at doing my CPL and IR back to back within the year. Im really looking for peoples findings for the different schools out there, and obviously the good and bad points about each. Its a hell of alot of money im going to be parting with and i need to do my homework to make sure i get the best instuction for my money, although money is not my prime factor. Im looking at the moment at:
Airways Flight Training at Exeter
Atlantic Flight Training at Coventry
Bournemouth Commercial Flight Training
Bristol Flying Centre

Anything good or bad on any of these would be great, but any other great schools that are out there that you would recommend, and i could consider would be most helpful.

Ive done my PPL, night and multi in the states, and although i fly in the UK, i feel im maybe a little behind the envelope somewhat for flying in the UK, so being able to bring me up to scratch is also a consideration:rolleyes: :confused: :rolleyes:

Bournemouth would be a good bet in my book. I'm not an employee and not trying to sell them to you, but i have worked at the club there for a few years. I can honestly say that the people there will treat you well and really bring your flying on huge amounts. From talking to many of the instructors on the CPL etc side of things, all they want is to be able to produce high quality pilots.
Airport is good. Fleet mainly Warriors/ArroWs, Seminoles and Dutchess'

Thanks for the replies so far. I have tried the search facility, but to be honest it doesn't really answer my question. I cant find anything at all for Airways Flight Training, which is the one im really quite keen on, so keep them coming !!

Dear Avrodamo,

I did my Integrated ATPL in Spain. It is a lot cheaper and you get a very good training. If I was you I would check out Aeromadrid www.aeromadrid.com. They offer a Integrated ATPL for a very good price a lot cheaper then in the UK. They have fabulous airplanes, all pipers, and very nice simulators. A full flight Airbus 320 simulator (from GE), Beech B200 and another multi crew simulators and single crew simulators. The teachers are fabulous!!! All come from airliners and from the university of Madrid. This course is perfect in preparation to an airline job!!! Especially because I think it is possible to pay a little bit extra more money and you have your typerating for the Airbus 319/320/321.

Good luck with the exams and give me a bell when you get your results. AppleMacster is partially correct; many RAF fast jet pilots go to AFT before they leave the Service to complete their IR. AFT have never advertised their training for very good reasons: they have no need. Word of mouth amongst military pilots has kept them in business for years. Go to a large school with lots of staff and lots of advertsising and guess what you're paying for?

Just a word about Tayflite. They will get the job done and possibly do it well but if time is against you then Tayflite may not be the best option since they might take a little longer than the other FTOs. Drop us a message if you want and I will tell you a little bit more 'off the air'!

I am in a similar position and am looking at doing my CPL over the summer.

Is it possible to do the CPL and IR at an approved school during evenings,weekends and holidays whilst staying in full time employment?

Any advice greatly appreciated as always.

I did mine part time with Mark Bills at Westflight in Gloucester. The CPL was OK, but the IR was hard work especially when you were at it 08.30 on a Sat and Sun morning. Good though, and they really worked around my timetable - and I got the IR first time.

There was 2 choices for me simply because i'm local when i was enquiring about my CPL/IR : Leeds flying school and Multi flight.

I have to say that when i spoke to Multi flight i got a very frosty and unhelpful receptionist.

I then spoke to Dylan at Leeds Flying school who was totally the opposite, more than helpful and gave me all the information i needed. My mind was made up the moment i was off the phone.

I'm now 2 weeks into my CPL at Leeds flying school and am not disappointed i chose them.

The instructors Stuart, Kevin & John have been fantastic and only the weather has put a dampener on the first week.

We all sit down and have a beer when the school closes , with the beer provided by the students who have just passed there CPL/IR (needless to say there's never a shortage of beer in the fridge !!! )

So if your looking for a good school with good instructors who won't take your money and run and want a friendly atmosphere
then Leeds flying school is the place to be.

Dunno about Airways Flight Training as a good choice.
I have been told by a few people that they are a bit of a RAF boys club and maybe a bit overwelming for your average 200 hr CPL holder.

But however, I'm gonna give them a call for the IR and see what they say, they can only laugh at my hours .. but thanks for the addy

I've visited quite a few (8 or 9) of the major IR training establisments in the UK during the last 8 months and, so far, Atlantic appear to be one of the most professional. Good balance between the economic stability of a large company with the small, friendly nature of a small one. Their FNPTG is being modified to FNPT II standard and should be available from Sep onwards at a very reasonable price (around £100 IIRC). They also have another FNPT II which is more expensive. Their new Seminole was reviewed in the latest Flyer and is very nice.

Also visited Airways Flight Training and was very impressed. Large numbers of RAF pilots go there and subsequently go on to the airlines. They won't scoff at your hours: you're a potential customer and source of money.

Visit and make your own mind up.

What about for CPL/IR renewals? I hear that you can do them on the FNPT2 - the IR bit anyway? Hope so as it will be a lot cheaper?

Looking at doing it in either the Stansted area or the Glasgow area. Have accommodation in both so that will ease the cost a bit. Any advice on what schools do it? Also I know you can do the CPL and IR on a single but as I already have ME then should I not do it on that to keep the ratings current?
