I'm in Auz on a working holiday, would like to do my PPL out here, but it needs to be JAA approved to continue onto bigger things when I get back to Europe. Does anyone know anywhere where I can do a JAA PPL??
I spoke to the CAA before I left and they said you need at least 100 aussie hours to convert the licence on return, any less than that and I would have to resit all seven exams and a cross country. 100 hrs is a bit ambitious for a poor traveller. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Regards

Sounds like the hours conversion rate is similar to the currency rate!!

What are the minimum hours over there for a PPL?, here in Aus is about 45-50hrs (IIRC), I couldn't see it being too different up there.

Converting to an aussie PPL all you need is your current O/Seas license & medical, present them to CASA and pass an open book Air Leg exam.
Seems odd that the hrs make such a big difference.

Allow me to pop me tuppence into this.

Last year I got a NZ PPL plus a shed full of hours and afterwards returned to ingerland. Spoke to the lovely people at the CAA ( and they were suprising lovely, no sarcasm intended ) and this is what they said.
a) As I have an ICAO license, I can fly whatever reg plane I like in the UK as long as it's VFR and no night flights. If I want to fly to abroad, I either have to fly a NZ registered plane (not very likely) or, phone up the french (or irish) equiv of the CAA and get permission to fly into their airspace. This is only required when the license and reg of the plane don't match.

b) to convert your license, the CAA are right. You need at least 100hrs, plus you need to have passed air law and human factors. Sit the skills and nav test, pay the man a fad wedge, and hey presto, you have a JAA licence. What your 100hrs gets you is essentially a waiver on all the other 4 PPL exams. Not much really
However, this is for a license conversion. There is nothing stopping you doing all the exams and sitting the test as long as you have the minimun 45hours and a class 2 medical.

Hope this helps somewhat.

I've just discovered that British Aerospace in Adelaide can issue JAA licences.

I've also heard that they are not cheap....

As pil said, there is actually no need to have a JAA licence to fly privately in a JAA country, you can fly day VFR private ops on an Australian licence. Then if you want to move on to bigger things, you can do the modular course. It's not as difficult as it sounds. Agree that the 100 hours requirement is crazy, and was strongly objected to, but they took no notice.

I understand that BAe in Adelaide don't do the JAA licences. Just checked their website and there is no reference to it there. Heard that it was all too hard and they didn't continue with it.

P.O.M. is almost right, to convert to an Australian licence you also need to pass a flight test. However you can apply for a Special Pilot Licence which only requires a flight review.

My advice is make the most of the weather and prices and do your PPL here in Aus. Lots of people from Europe do.

The original question was 'JAA PPLs in Auz??????' to which the answer is No. There are no JAA approved training organisations or Registered Facilities in Australia and so it is not possible to train for a JAA licence.

As for BAe Adelaide issuing JAA licences - no training organisation can issue a JAA licence, that can only be done by the National Aviation Authority of a JAA Member State.

The only option is to gain an Australian PPL which, being issued in accordance with ICAO Annex 1, can be used in the UK for Day, VFR flights. The training and tests undertaken for that licence will not, however, count towards a JAA PPL

What if I have a JAA PPL and go to OZ for some hour building?

Can I log the hours in my log book and will they count?

Yep, with a JAA PPL you can hour build on that licence in Oz. Check out CASA for more info.

Another quick question - what if you have a JAA PPL, go over to oz and get a twin rating and come back to the UK. How does that stand up with my JAA licence???? Will I only be allowed to fly it during the day ??

You will not be allowed to fly it at all Autofly! You must complete an approved course to get your SPA MEP Rating.

Stay tuned, there might be JAR training in Oz soon...
